hi all,

I have a new question/problem. Currently my text with citations reads
along the lines of:

"Recent finding suggest the moon is made of cheese [23] but this is
disputed by some authors [9]. Still others purport that the lunar
matrix can best be described as a creamy feta cheese [64]"

And then in the references, we start with reference 1 through to 64...

I would like the text to read like:

"Recent finding suggest the moon is made of cheese [1] but this is
disputed by some authors [2]. Still others purport that the lunar
matrix can best be described as a creamy feta cheese [3]."

And then the references start with 1 through to 64 but now the order
of the references is as they first appear in the text (references
listed in order of appearance).

Is there a natbib option for this, or a bst file that is compatible
with natbib that would do this? I like the natbib package because it
gives me the option to switch between "Chambers et al (1723) suggests
the moon is made of cheese" using \citet and "Recent finding suggest
the moon is made of cheese [23]" using \citep.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

As far as I've read, bibliography items are typically inserted into
the bibliography as you need them. Therefore, one may assume that they
are interested in the fashion you want them displayed - in the order
they appear in the text. BibTeX and natbib alike then use different
ways of sorting the bibliography contents to specific requirements.
Consequently, if you leave the list unsorted (using the unsrt or
unsrtnat style), it should appear in your required order. However, I
doubt whether there is a 'sorting' mechanism for sorting according to
your citation sequence. I say 'doubt' because honestly I have no
idea...

...so, it seems like you'll have to input your references in the way
you cite them to obtain what you want. And the reason for me saying
this is because it would have to be a citation package (as opposed to
a bibliography package) that would keep track of the citation order,
and then sort the bibliography according to that order...which I don't
think has been done before. I actually agree that it would be a nice
attribute to have, if someone is willing to program it in (La)TeX. I
don't know how though...
