I'm ignoranct about these things. My attempt an answer aims at
my own laerning.

The "curved hat" over a character looks like a breve, and it can be
produced with \u{}. For example, a breve "X" would be \u(X). A breve
"i" would be \u{\i}.

But I don't know what your subscript "r" after
your character examples refers to. I can constructed it:

\u{X}$_{\mathrm{r}}$

\u{X}$_r$

but perhaps there is a better way.

Try

\usepackage{mathabx}
...
$\wideparen{y}_r$

Ah! In my dotage I flipped the wide hat symbol over to
a breve. My apologies. This creates the desired character:

\usepackacs{arcs}
...
\overarc{X}$_{\mathrm{r}}$

but for some reason when I view the result the desired
character is preceeded with "6.0pt", and I don't know why (CTAN seems
down, so can't consult archs manual).

A larger wide hat without this problem:

\newcommand{\tarc}{\mbox{\small$\frown$}}
\newcommand{\arc}[1]{\stackrel{\tarc}{#1}}
...
$\arc{X}_{\mathrm{r}}$

See p 23 of the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List. Specifically, it points to this patch.
