Hello,

I'm running into a problem with too much extra vertical space (for my
taste anyway) occuring after a line that is initially started with a
\paragraph command. I realize that
I can redefine the command, but since I want the heading to be a 'run-
in' heading, the afterskip definition actually sets the horizontal
spacing after the heading and, as far as I understand, has no effect
on the the vertical spacing.

Can anyone suggest a simple solution to this problem?

Many thanks.

Mike

What problem? You will have to give *SOME HINT* as to
where your version of \paragraph comes from. My hint
is that there is no extra vertical space after \paragraph,
but you seem to know that already.

Hi Donald,

My apologies for not providing enough information. I hope what I
present below is sufficient.

I have the problem with both the default latex article version of
paragraph (pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3) and a revised version as
follows have the problem.

\renewcommand\paragraph{\@startsection{paragraph}{4}{\z@}%
{0.2ex \@plus 1ex \@minus 0.1ex}%
{-0.5em}%
{\normalfont\normalsize\bfseries}}

If you go to:
www.tiem.utk.edu/~mikeg/Hidden/research.statement.pdf
you can see what I'm talking about. Compare the spacing after "Host-
Parasite Coevolution" to "Viral Evolution".

I hope that's a sufficent hint.

Sincerely,

Mike

Exactly! I presume they are both \paragraph, so therefore
\paragraph is not the problem. What is it that made the
inset figure, wrapfig? That is clearly the problem, by
itself or that it doesn't interact with \paragraph properly.

(By the way, I wouldn't make the figures so small, and would
let them occupy a whole column.)

Ahh, I see and "Yes", I'm using wrapfig, specifically the figwindow
environment. Do you have any suggestions on how to solve this
problem?

Thanks.

I think you will need to post a short demonstration document
in order to clarify your real situation, because the "figwindow"
environment is not part of the "wrapfig" package.
