A journal has an unusual citation style for parenthetical reference:
it puts the year in another parenthesis .

Here is the desired form:

(Jones et al. (1990))

Any ideas on how to get it?

Thanks.

Hmmm

I didn't find a style that produces "( ... () )"      but there are some the generate "[ ... (year) ]"

Search for example, the bibliography style "jtbnew".

It produces an ouptut like "  ... of van Leunen [van Leunen(1979)], "

I think you can't produce this automatically. However you can get this form manually.

(\cite{JonesX})

In Bibliography section you should write

\bibitem[Jones, 1990]{JonesX}Some text
