amsmath \DeclareOperator with underscript.

How can I declare and operator that behaves like \lim, \sum, such that
the subscript is actually an underscript? I would like to define
\res{Res} for residue.

p.s. the leading result from Google of "latex residue" is completely

\DeclareMathOperator*{\res}{Res}
This should do what you want, but I've only seen
the subscripts done for residues that way when
handwritten. AFAIK, the usual way to typeset it is
Res(f;z_0).

Hi,
Please use:

\def\res{\mathop{Res}}

Then in display mode the sub/super script will appear on bottom and top and in text mode as usual sub/super scripts.

If you need sub/super scripts to appear and under/over script, both in text and display mode, then the definition should be:

\def\res{\mathop{Res}\limits}

I hope this is what you are searching for.
