Social media is built on status updates, short messages that let you quickly tell everyone around how you're doing and what you're up to. And although it isn't a traditional social media app, Slack uses status updates too.

4. Once you've typed your status, use the Clear after option to choose how long you'd like the status to last. You can pick one of several preset dates, or Choose date and time to set a custom length. If you're going on vacation, for instance, you might set it to clear on the day you come back to work.

Hi, I've noticed when you set an animated emoji as a status on the Slack app, on a Mac it displays that "animated" emoji as a fixed image. You only see the animation if you hover over the status. If you view that same status on iOS, the animation is visible in any conversation, without a hover or click action.

Is there any way to make animated emojis in statuses always animate? I'm aware this is very minor, but I figured why not ask if there was something I'm missing. Under my Preferences > Accessibility I've selected the option to allow animated emojis so that isn't an issue.

You can select from five default options, including in a meeting, commuting, out sick, vacationing and working remotely, which are all accompanied by a relevant emoji. If none of these work for your status update or away message you can create a custom version.

There are multiple ways to quickly change your Slack status to away, busy, or a custom status and emoji. You can do it manually. Or, you can sync Slack with Google Calendar within G Suite. This Slack integration makes your work life easier in at least three ways:

Many people fail to understand the importance of setting up a Slack Out of Office status before leaving for their vacation. However, setting up an auto-reminder to inform your fellow colleagues that you are taking time off from work can ultimately save you tons of hassle when you get back.

Once you select a status, you have the option to select when the status will clear. You can choose from a variety of times, ranging from anywhere as short as 30 minutes to your preferred date and time.

Vacation Tracker users can easily set up automatic Slack Out of Office messages while creating a leave type. These Slack statuses will be the same for all users taking a particular leave type. For example, all users taking the Paid Time Off leave type can display a status saying that they are taking some time off from work.

Another way to effortlessly keep your team informed of your Out of Office status in Slack is by setting Vacation Tracker notifications. Once you set it up, our bot will automatically inform all users in a channel about any upcoming leaves in your organization.

Determine a user's currently set custom status by consulting their profile. You'll find profiles attached to user objects returned by users.list and users.info. Both methods require the users:read OAuth scope.

If your bot user runs on the Events API, you can only toggle your bot's active or away status by managing your app and its Bot Users panel, or for apps published in the App Directory, on the Live App Settings panel.

RTM API Presence is now only available via subscription. As of January 2018, presence_change events are not dispatched without presence subscriptions established with presence_sub. Relatedly, current user presence status is no longer communicated in rtm.start. Learn more.

Reclaim's integration for Slack can automatically update your Slack status so others know that you are busy, as well as enable Do Not Disturb during events where you want to stay in focus mode. With Slack status sync, you can:

When you select Custom status + do not disturb, an expanded menu will appear offering additional customization options for how you want your Slack status to appear to others based on event category. The event categories you can customize are:

Busy? On vacation? Let your teammates know that you're occupied with a simple Slack status. When your work is getting on top of you, it's easier to let everyone know via a status than individual messages. Otherwise, that's just one more thing you have to do when you don't have the time to.

Slack gives us a couple of options to share where you are, how you are, why you are where you are, and so on. Slack status is a customizable message that lets your team know what you're up to.

Using a preset status
1. Launch Shift and open your Slack workplace
2. Click the name of your Workplace
3. Go to "Set a Status ..."
4. Under Set a status, select one of the suggested statuses (eg. In a meeting, Commuting)

Using a custom status
1. Launch Shift and open your Slack workplace
2. Click the name of your Workplace
3. Go to "Set a status ..."
4. Type whatever you want into the text box
5. Click the emoticon to the left to select a matching emoji

Adjusting the time window
Vacation brain often gets the best of us and we might forget to disable the status after returning. Luckily, Slack has a feature where you can set up a specific timeframe. When the time runs out, your status will automatically disappear too.

Setting the time window is also super easy:
1. Firstly, Go to "Edit status..."
2. Beneath the input box, you'll see the "Clear after" function
3. Choose how long you want the status to last

Now that you have mastered Slack statuses, make sure to hop on your Shift and set the status to all applicable workplaces. Not using Shift to manage your Slack workplaces yet? Download Shift now and start saving time!

You may have noticed that the Home Assistant > Slack communication is unidirectional, and any change applied directlyin Slack is not reflected in the dashboard. I think the proper way to handle this is to enhance the existing Slackintegration in Home Assistant, which does not support status changes in any shape or form at this time. Could be a funweekend project to tackle one day…

I want to delay the next step (setting the status) until the actual event starts. This is needed due to how the previous step works, as it might trigger up to 16 minutes earlier than the meeting start time.

I update the Slack status with information on when I will be done my meeting, as well as provide a clear status emoji. With the expiration time field, the status is cleared after the meeting is completed.

Another place I automate Slack statuses is for focus time. While at work, there are times I need a deep focus time (i.e., being in the zone). I use PomoDoneApp as my Pomodoro application of choice. Fortunately for me, it also interfaces with Zapier.

Did you know that Slack comes with a feature to automate repetitive tasks*, such as sending a message or a form to fill in, to either an individual or an entire channel?

The options can also be expanded, for example, adding a row to a Google sheet or creating a Jira issue, and one of the triggering options is reacting to a message with an emoji.
