You'll find all of the files needed for the extension in the src/ directory of the package you downloaded. You'll need to copy the contents of this directory (unicorn.inx, unicorn.py and the unicorn/ directory) to your Inkscape extensions directory.

Fire up Inkscape (or restart it if you had it open) and select File Save a Copy. If the extension is installed properly, you should see the MakerBot Unicorn G-Code (*.gcode) option.

i just set up my new 3018 cnc pro. grbl driver. inkspace was suggested, installed it, had to add markerbot unicorn, my designs in inkspace will not save in g code format. does anyone have any thoughts. different cadcam software, different extension? saving in g code is the last block for me to get 3018 actually engraving my designs. please help. i badly need this to work. thank you in advance for any time or advise anyone can give me. yes i am new to the cnc/design niche.

Please tell us about your project, including the SVG file of the drawing. Please tell us exactly the steps you're taking - exactly. Also please include any error messages you might have received. Also please tell us what you mean by not saving in gcode. Do you mean that you can't find the file? Or it produced a file but it's empty? Or something else?

If you don't have a makerbot unicorn machine, you might be able to use a different Inkscape extension. There are many which produce gcode - some are already installed in Inkscape, many others that need to be installed.

Thank you for replying. I wont bore you with every detail of designing a text to engrave, but will say that I cover all the selection settings in Path and Extension needs to create a g-code file. In Gcode tools tab thru extensions selecting "path to code" does create a file on my desktop but putting the file in grbl cnc operator is ok, but when I click send it crashes. Error code as in pic #1. the other issue is trying to "save as" thru Inkspace file menu. Click "file, save as, select "markerbot unicorn" gcode converter thru file ext type, ok and I get the error code in pic #3, click ok there and still unable to save. Same problem for anything I try to save as gcode. Never get it cnc. the machine itself works fine with an offline controller that looks like an old Nintendo paddle so its not that. If anyone can help that would be great.

The file saved to desktop is .ngc, I can click and drag it to grbl controller and there is info there, I attatched that exact file for viewing, but click send (start) crashes it. Saving in gcode? gcode is a file ext type cnc needs to operate.

You need to settle on one extension (or set of extensions) or another. As far as I know, they won't work together, and are not interchangeable. Since I know the basics for using Gcodetools extensions, I can give you the general steps. But I can't help at all with the makerbot unicorn extension.

I have the impression it's meant to be used with makerbot unicorn hardware, though. Possibly that's why it's not working? Although that's just a guess....it might be broken anyway. Is there some reason you decided to install it? Is your hardware meant to work with it?

Or, as I said before, there are many extensions which produce gcode, and I don't really know if one or another would work better with your particular setup or hardware. If you look in the top-right area of this forum, there's a "Learn" dropdown menu. Choose Inkscape Resources List. On that page, scroll down to the bottom part of the page, to the Extensions section, and click on the "Export" list item. That list item will expand. Scroll down to the Gcode section, and you can browse all the external extensions which are available. Not all of those necessarily work, or work with every version of Inkscape. Most of them are specific to certain hardware, as far as I understand.

Thank you Maren and Bryan. Fortunately I dont have any problem in Inkspace. Markerbot unicorn is said to be what is needed for Inkspace to produce the gcode file for grbl operated cnc mother board. I get positive results until I click save. I get the 10 line error code and click ok on the error window, then another window pops up and says file cant be saved. Ill take a look at the other extensions Bryan mentioned and try again. Thank you.

hi Imohr83900 I did find that the Markerbot unicorn, is not actually for NC, program it is for a ink pen marker, and after watching some of the videos I have started having success using the tool and path to code functions recently I have been creating very good nc gcode programs which with minor adjustment work fabulously in my 3018 engraver if you wish I will try to help there are setting which in document you need to set on pixel that straightened out the Markerbot unicorn issue

Furthermore you can copy and past past multiple gcode files into one as long as you add the new starting position at the end of each file. As mentioned above you have a number of variables to play with in Cad.py. To the best of my knowledge this is their functions:

But, why am I talking about giant unicorns?! Sandy Noble, the creator of the Polargraph,2 just posted about how he has created a vector graphics importer for the Polargraph software. This is some pretty amazing stuff. The MakerBot Unicorn has several software toolpaths that take vector graphics to GCode for printing through ReplicatorG. The end result is that a Polargraph rocking a vector graphic importer should be able to draw arbitrary shapes, without the need to draw scribbly bits.

I have used ALL Fedora 34 Inkscape to design a small cam, similar to the Fedora Logo above. Found Inkscape to be a reasonable tool for mechanical design, circles could be better though. Anyway, tried a G-Code extension, some ware in Russia, at best did not WORK FOR ME.
Found that Inkscape fed into => JScut online (gcode) => CNCjs online fed into 1830 router/mill.
I will try the G-code paths mentioned above, as I am sure there are better Inkscape to G-code generation methods. Also, with my above G-code generation path, I still need to go into the G-code file and edit for both BETTER TIMEs and part outcomes.

Hi,
I assembled one of this...when I generate GCODE by inkscape there are 2 problems that make the equipment not work. The G4 commands (wait) and I need to replace the servo commands to M3S90 (pen up) and M3S68 (pen down). If I edit them manually my gcode works fine, but when I use the original inkscape gcode the GRBL stops and show a warning of error or buffer too small...could u help me????

Dear Sir, I have seen your video, it is helpful. I am trying to build a cnc writting machine. But I don't know how to send the gcode to arduino Uno. Pl help me. What softwares(version) are required and where they have to placed. Pl give me step by step guide lines. I am confused. How are arduino code are related with gcode for plotting in cnc writting machine. Pl help. I will be grateful. Thanks . B. Sanyal

When I try to Save As file to g-code I receive a message that says " inkscape has received additional data from script executed. the script did not return an error but may indicate the results will not be implemented.....File 'unicorn py' line 23, in from unicorn.context import GcodeContext ImportError: No module name context

I downloaded Inkscape .92.2 from Inkscape.org. When I opened the software I uploaded a svg image I got online. I set up my image to fit in the square and when I went to Save As I saved as Markerbot unicorn.gcode and then I got a display of the codes, selected OK, then I got the error message. I have attached images.

But when you download Inkscape software from net there is not a G-CODE save as option so you need to add a library Extension in inkscape for this download the following Makerboat g-code unicorn extension

You begin by telling PCB-GCode a little about your milling machine, including positions and feed rates (and that ReplicatorG wants dimensions in mm). Once configured, running PCB-GCode is almost anticlimactic. It flashes some things on and off in your board layout while it figures toolpaths, then drops several *.nc g-code files in your directory. ReplicatorG really likes g-code files to be named *.gcode, so I copied the top-side file accordingly.
