to LAStools - efficient tools for LiDAR processing
I'm using the ArcToolbox interface of LAStools and am attempting to use the lastile function to tile a point cloud dataset that I have exported from CloudCompare.  Because I have scalar fields with my output, I have been trying to use the .bin and .txt formats for input and output.  For numerous iterations, lastile was failing and after some troubleshooting, it seemed that my initial problems were due to lastile having trouble parsing the header. After removing the header, I can now get the tiling to complete - BUT, regardless of whether I set the the output format to .txt or .bin, the files that are created are in .las format.  Anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing this?  I just downloaded and installed the most recent version of LAStools to make sure that wasn't the problem.

Because I'm putting my analysis together in ArcGIS, I can envision a workaround in ArcGIS where I have tiled .las output that I convert to .txt, import into Arc, and then use the joining functions to append the corresponding scalar fields (from a .txt saved from CloudCompare) to the appropriate points in the point cloud tiles created from lastile. But since it seems that I shouldn't have to do these extra steps - I'm hoping someone might help me identify where the glitch is using lastile.

thanks!

Hello,

if you run lastile via it's native GUI (double-click the lastile.exe program in the .\LAStools\bin folder) you will see that only LAS and LAZ are supported as output options. You would have to do the conversion to *.txt with a separate call to las2txt or the conversion to *.bin with a separate call to las2las. Sorry about that. But they are called "LAStools" not "TXTtools" ... (-;

Hi Doc Martin:

This is a ralated issue about tile output - I followed to the letter the Blog site where you discussed the Tile is a must for many blocks of data to be put together and processed in the divide and conquer approach.
I have like flood plain flights that has on my list 35 blocks of 1km x 1km each. Seemed to worked really fine until I get to a point that that I wanted my -first_only returns and my -last_only returns separately after a las2dem call (or blast2dem anyway could be too).
I have like a folder /frDSM full of first returns with a filename tile_ptxxxyyyy_frDSM.bil and a folder /lrDSM inside are last returns with filenames tile+ptxxxyyy_lrDSM.bil now I am interested to get my normalized DSM which I have a folder /nDEM.
Now when I invoke the lasdiff.exe so that effectively I would be pointing to each entries on the folder and have a one to one correspondence between the files - I get an error saying:
"...does note end in either .las or .laz " ?

Why? In the past it has always work? I have frDSM-lrDSM (.bil) and I get what I wanted rdDEM (.laz)? The files by the way in the folder have been buffered - would that not do? Or is this a bug?
How do you get to have a number appended on each time automatically? Would it be alright that the exec generates a list text file visible to me?

I hope that I could be clarified and helped on this.

Thanks and see you at ACRS 2015 Manila, Philippines next week!

Regards,
Berns B.
