Hi,

I use Lidar data to make golf courses in a video game (TGC 2019).  There is a 3rd party tool that takes only Point Cloud data.

Some locations on the UK Defra website do not have Point Cloud source files.  But they do have DTM and DSM data.

When I pull in that DTM and DSM data I see TIF files and TFW sidecar files.  Is it possible to make an approximate point cloud file from that data, using LasTools?

I am a computer geek and work with data routinely, but I do not know Lidar data formats and I am not familiar with LasTools, but I understand how to run an exe with switches and that kind of thing.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hello,

Try to use demzip.exe that you will find in the LAStools/bin folder. This turns rasters from traditional raster formats such as TIF, IMG, or ASC to "raster LAZ", namely a gridded point cloud. This is something I have been advocating for a while now. A raster is really just a very special point cloud where the points are on a grid and organized into c columns and r rows. So "raster LAZ" is essentially a format that is a point format when only points are needed but keeps the information about being gridded onto a raster and can provide the standard row and column, banded row, or tiled raster access whenever it is beneficial to work with a raster.
