to LAStools - efficient command line tools for LIDAR processing, The LAS room - a friendly place to discuss specifications of the LAS format
Hello,

Good news. Apparenly the TerraScan/TerraMatch/TerraPhoto software of Terrasolid as well as the LiDAR Analyst of TEXTRON Systems are now also able to read and write (?!?) LASzip-compressed LiDAR files in the LAZ (*.laz) format. For a complete list of software with LAZ support see:

It appears at this point it would be faster to list only those software packages that do not yet support LAZ. (-; The LAStools user who told me about these news wrote

"I see Terrasolid now supports LAZ. I don’t use terrasolid personally, but the boys and girls in the back sure do and this is awesome!!! Our 160TB server effectively just turned into 1PB and our 10Gb Ethernet just became 100Gb Ethernet."

Do you use Terrascan? LAStools can be a powerful complement to Terrascan for all the "heavy lifting" ... especially now that Terrasolid supports LAZ. More and more of our clients replace fully automated LiDAR processing tasks that used to block their valuable Terrascan seats for days, weeks, or even months with batch-scripts that combine LAStools and GDAL. This can be much more efficient and much more scalable - especially if you do processing on many cores or even in the cloud. It allows you to focus your valuable Terrascan seats on the more complex tasks that LAStools is not so well suited for ... (-:
