Hello,

just in time for the ESRI DevSummit: the new LAStools LiDAR processing
toolbox for ArcGIS with initially seven tools: lasclip, las2shp,
lastile, lasthin, las2dem, lasground, and lasboundary. This release
seems solid but still in beta. I am looking forward to feedback (aka
bug reports or suggestions).

You find the toolbox in the

C:\lastools\arcgis

folder of the latest LAStools release (120328). You find the python
scripts that translate the toolbox calls into lastools command lines
in the folder

C:\lastools\arcgis\scripts

If you know your way around LAStools you can probably expose whatever
option is not yet exposed in the toolbox and modify the python script
accordingly.

Cheers,

Martin @lastools

Hello Ryszard,

I saved the Toolbox from ArcMap -ArcEditor version 10 (build 2414) but
I assumed it is compatible to Arcgis 9.3. Does anyone else have
troubles importing the LAStools.tbx toolbox?

Cheers,

Martin @lastools

Hi Martin,

Problem solved.
You can add LAStool toolbox to Arcgis 10.
Click right on LAStool and save as 9.3 (or other version).
Now you can add LAStool to Arcgis 9.3 (or other version).

Hello Ryszard,

thanks for reporting back. In the latest LAStools release (120403) I
have now replaced the LAStools.tbx toolbox with the 9.3 version so
that more ESRI ArcMap versions should be able to read it now. This
also comes with a big update in toolbox functionality as practically
all LAStools are now also accessible as ESRI toolbox tools.

I am looking forward to more feedback (aka bug reports and/or
suggestions).

Hello,

i had someone report issues using the toolbox (from yesterday's
update) in combination with ArcGIS 9.3 build1770 with Phyton 2.5.1
(r251:54863). Apparently ArcGIS 10 works fine. I am an absolute ArcGIS
newbie. The error is: "Runtime Error: no module named arcpy." (see
attached screenshot). Could this be an issue with the path? Can
someone shed some light on this?

Regards,

Martin @lastools

The Arcpy module was not introduced until ArcGIS 10.

There is a python library called arcgisscripter or something along those lines that works with 9.3 and I think scripts build with calls to that will also run in arc 10.

Hi all,

The txt2las.py file included with the lastools distribution does not import arcpy, so something else is trying to..

I think it may be due to the tool validator firing.  The validator tries to import arcpy.  I have copied the validator "code" below.  If a parameter is flagged as required for example then the validator will fire.

Here is a URL to the Validator class info: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//00150000000t000000.htm

The attached toolbox is a 9.3 version of Martin’s toolbox with the validator class calls updated.  If you place it in the same folder as the original distribution and add the toolbox it should work ....if in fact the issue is with the validator!

I tested it on a 9.3 Build 1770 and it worked.

Hello,

thanks a lot for the fix, Rick. I have put your 9.3 compatible version
into the Easter release of LAStools. I cannot test it myself on ArcGIS
9.3 but everything still seems to work on ArcGIS 10 and the arcpy
calls are gone. If there are still issues with any tool on either
ArcGIS version please let me know as I did not check whether Rick
really changed the code everywhere. There could be a forgotten change
or a copy&paste error somewhere.

The other change (besides a few small minor bug fixes) in the Easter
release is that all LAStools can now also on-the-fly convert binary
BIL grids (and not only ASCII ASC grids) to point input:

lasview -i dem.bil
lasinfo -i dem.asc
las2las -i dem.asc -utm 28N -o dem.laz
las2las -i dem.bil -o dem.xyz

Cheers
