Do the shp files thus generated by this tool have any information of z coordinate of the polygon generated, I need to know the height of the building polygon also. If not, Can anyone tell how can I fetch the information of height of a building from the shape file generated by LASboundary

Hello Rohil,

the z coordinates are stored to the generated Shapefile but it seems you are looking the wrong place. The z coordinates are *literally* stored in the *.shp file instead of as an attribute to the *.dbf file. The Shapefile uses Shapetype PolygonZ that has in addition to X, Y, and M and entry for Z. How to copy the Z values from the *.shp file to a new "elevation" or "Z" attribute in the *.dbf file is not something I have ever done. I found some page that seems to describe how to do this in QGIS / Spatialte / PostGIS but there are probably other ways too and I am sure also ArghGIS can do this.

Hi,

we have simple tool in SAGA for this purpose: "Convert Vertex Type
(2D/3D)" -
http://www.saga-gis.org/saga_module_doc/2.2.7/shapes_tools_23.html

The conversion from 2D to 3D is lossless for all geometry types, but
converting 3D lines and polygons to 2D is not in case the vertices of a
geometry have different z-values - we can keep only one z-value as
attribute for the geometry.

Regards,
Volker
