to LAStools - efficient tools for LiDAR processing
Hello everybody,
I have tested e572las.exe in order to classify E57 source data (actually the only way to my pt is to get that data in Las format as input).
So here are the LAZ fields displayed.

DO you have any idea why I have got that kind of data, especially why easting/northing/elevation are translated like that ?
It seems there is a wrong translation of the spherical coord to a 3D ref frame ?

thanks for your tips.
I know e572las.exe is a alpha version.
If you know better converter please advice !

Hello Antoine,

Have you solved your issue? I'm somewhat puzzled by the two images as neither of these are showing a LAStools interface. What are they supposed to convey? Is that the E57 export software? Can you not export LAS/LAZ directly? It seems most software has added support for the LAS/LAZ formats given how popular yet simple this format is. It's been a while since e572las was written and at the time it was really just an experiment with the E57 API. The tool does not support the full feature set of the E57 format. Is there a lot of uptake in the E57 format? I very rarely come across content stored as E57 but that might be because I have less exposure to terrestrial scanning than to airborne/mobile/drone surveys.

Regards,

Martin @rapidlasso

Hello Martin, below are my answers to your questions

Have you solved your issue?
Yes.

I'm somewhat puzzled by the two images as neither of these are showing a LAStools interface. What are they supposed to convey? Is that the E57 export software?
It is a screenshot of terrascan (terrasolid) main windows, just to show coordinates after E57toLas use. CloudCompare or PDAL shows the same result, I use that soft because they offer a GUI.

Can you not export LAS/LAZ directly?
I succeeded with the following workflow, not straightfoward unfortunately
a/   E57 converted in POD (POD is the native format of Bentley Microstation soft which manage well E57 import)
b/   POD to LAS1.2 (export from Microstation which manage well LAS export)
c/   further classif work on my LAS

It seems most software has added support for the LAS/LAZ formats given how popular yet simple this format is. It's been a while since e572las was written and at the time it was really just an experiment with the E57 API. The tool does not support the full feature set of the E57 format. Is there a lot of uptake in the E57 format?
To be honest I don't know, E57 is xml format and should be "open" and supported by many instrument manufacturers as well as softwares that process laserscanner data; from my experience and what i've seen on internet E57 is more or less considered as the "neutral " standard format for TLS instrument. For MMS et ALS instrument I think LAS/LAZ is THE standard format as you may know ;)

I very rarely come across content stored as E57 but that might be because I have less exposure to terrestrial scanning than to airborne/mobile/drone surveys.
E57 is indeed used for 3D laser scan , machine vision 2 pointcloud at small scale (TLS, handheld scanner, etc...). E57 has no compression. Not suitable for massive dataset...
