I'm always conflicted about AI in photography, preferring to make my own adjustments. On the other hand, AI is getting better, and can sometimes give you a starting place from which you can adjust more. It also can draw new photographers into the beginnings of serious editing, and if these AI filters are just that, a start, and not just a matter of automatic button pushing, it's all to the better.

The software can run in a completely automated mode, where you click on a "look" and the software delivers it via AI. There is a fully manual mode, with no AI adjustments. There are controls for things like highlights, clarity, shadow depth, and the sort of adjustments you may be used to in applications like Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. Using a split screen or smaller side by side full image display, you can immediately see the result. The third mode is an HDR AI mode, with clarity and detail sliders.

I did like the effects I got from the AI side of the program, but as I looked more closely I saw certain parameters I wanted to adjust on my own using the AI settings as a starting place. I feel as if I got the best rendering of my image that way. By comparing the original to the AI based suggestions, it was easy to see what changes were being applied.

I should note that you can achieve many of these looks by using the tools in Lightroom or Photoshop, or your favorite raw editor. However, the addition of AI from Topaz can certainly save a pro time, and get a less experienced photographer closer to a compelling image. When you first load a photo, Topaz Adjust AI takes several seconds to ingest the data. From that point, choosing different looks is quite fast, maybe 3 seconds on my 2012 Mac Pro.

Topaz is not the first to harness AI for image processing. Skylum has been offering products like Luminar that have similar features. Like Adjust AI, sliders can modify the depth of the effect, which I think is necessary with software like this. AI programs tend to default to the most colorful renders, and I find myself taking things down a notch to edit to my taste.

Topaz Adjust AI is a fine application and plugin. Topaz has a lot of experience in image editing and it shows in this software. To answer my own question as stated in my headline, yes, Topaz Adjust AI is a worthy editor or editing assistant. There's a lot of AI hype, but Topaz works well regardless of your level of editing experience. The application of artificial intelligence can save experienced and beginning photographers some time. For people like me, who would rather create my own looks for individual images, all the controls are there. Still, the automation can work wonders, save time, and can always be modified to taste.

I love Topaz products and love most of their AI products. But to me so far this doesn't hold a candle to their regular Topaz Adjust, which has always been my go-to for quick tweaks I can't do on my own despite being pretty adept at retouching.

Each time the good people at Topaz Labs have updated Adjust, it has gotten more and more cool. A lot of other Topaz plugins have been getting the AI (artificial intelligence) treatment as well, so seeing this kind of tech come to Adjust is awesome.

For the photo above I made a few small adjustments in Lightroom and then jumped to Photoshop to remove a few distractions in the sand. I then added Adjust AI as a Photoshop filter. After saving the image back to Lightroom I added a slight vignette and some sharpening.

For the architecture shot above I started with 3 exposures bracketed and merged them in Aurora HDR 2019. I then took the merged HDR into Adjust AI to bring out the textures and colors. Finally, back in Lightroom I added a subtle vignette.

This error appears when a model file needed to process an image is missing or the AI engine is not able to run on the computer. Please go through the sections below sequentially to troubleshoot this error.

If your computer graphics card does not meet the system requirements, you can open Topaz Photo AI and click the Processor menu to try the CPU option. If the CPU can process an image, that indicates the graphics card is does not meet the minimum requirements for Topaz Photo AI.

For situations where neither the CPU or graphics card can process the image, it's very likely that your installation of Topaz Photo AI is missing model files. This can happen if antivirus, firewall, or a VPN blocked the installer from downloading the files.

If that does not fix it, please open Topaz Photo AI and go to the menu bar on the top. Click the Help > Open Log Folder menu option, which will open up a folder with text files. The folder will look like this.

Email he...@topazlabs.com and attach ALL the text files in the folder to the email. Make the email subject "Error Loading Model in Topaz Photo AI" so our support team can quickly review and help you resolve the error.

Topaz Adjust just got better. The popular photo adjustment program was upgraded to include more powerful functionality and many new features. Many professional photographers have started using Topaz as a part of their post-processing for stunning yet subtle improvements.

As you begin, you can choose a Collection type from the Effects menu and then apply one of the included presets or you can start your work manually using the tabs and sliders in the tool panel. Whether you decide to work with presets, manual adjustments or both, you will be able to customize your enhancements using the tools in the three adjustment tabs.

Local Adjustments: This step allows you to selectively apply image adjustments using an advanced brush. Adjustments include burning, dodging smoothing and erasing/brushing out applied adjustments.

Here you can apply a variety of tone mapped effects using the unique sliders to adjust the range of the highest and lowest luminance regions where detail is visible. You can also correct exposure, balance lighting and redefine tonal values.

2. By increasing the Adaptive Exposure and Regions sliders we can increase the local contrast in the image and introduce more variations of color and detail. You can see that the background looks less flat and is starting to show some definition.

3. Moving to the Detail tab, we can increase the detail in the image and aslo use the small boost slider to give it more texture. Be sure not to over use the Detail Boost slider as it can often create an unwanted noise-like effect.

The Noise tab offers basic noise reduction capabilities. This tool often comes in handy because Adjust can enhance the noise that is already there or sometimes create noise as a side effect of the adjustments made. It is best used as a mid-workflow tool specifically for eliminating the noisy effects that can occur while working in Adjust.

The Curve Tool offers additional control and flexibility over image contrast, brightness and tone. You can make adjustments here manually or use any of the pre-loaded curves presets. There is also a built-in histogram for added convenience.

The Dodge and Burn adjustment types are used to lighten (dodge) or darken (burn) specific areas of your image by increasing or limiting the exposure in those areas. Use the Overall Strength slider to determine how strong or weak the dodge/burn is applied to your image.

Edge Aware controls how edge aware the brush is. Higher values indicate an increase in awareness, which is good for precise selections. Lower values indicate less awareness, allowing for a more natural brush stroke and transition.

8. Find a preset that you like or use the sliders in the Color tab. For this example we applied the Photo Pop preset to the image. You are also welcome to tweak the preset effects using the sliders to optimize the look for your image.

In this video Deborah Sandidge presents her own workflow and technique when creating single image HDR looks within Adjust. *This was with Adjust version 4, but the same techniques still apply to the new upgraded version.

Topaz Labs is a Texas based software house that specializes in image modification and enhancement plug-ins for PhotoShop, Lightroom, Aperture, and iPhoto. Topaz plug-ins allow the user to quickly apply any of an included collection of visual effect presets to an image, and to tweak those effects via additional adjustment controls. Each plug-in typically focuses on a particular photographic effect or look, and allows the user to experiment with that effect as desired. Topaz Labs sells the plug-ins individually or packaged together as a bundle.

For this review, I will be focusing on how I use the Topaz plug-ins within my post processing workflow, rather than on trying to describe the functions of any of the plug-ins in detail. The Topaz website has many excellent video tutorials, and I highly recommend watching the tutorials in order to get the most from their line of products.

I also wanted to modify the image to look less like a photograph, and more like the original Expressionist painting. To accomplish this, I used the Curly Smooth preset of the Topaz Clean plug-in. This preset is very similar to the Anisotropic Diffusion filter in PhotoShop, but provides additional control via the adjustment sliders.

My image has now been modified to incorporate both the shallow depth of field and the Expressionist edges that I associate with the Scream. My next step is to modify the light treatment on the image to simulate the high contrast exposure of the original. For this, I bring the image into the Topaz Adjust plug-in, and apply the High Key II preset.
