Ira does happy backflips in the calm waters of Chilika Lake. But she and the other friendly Irrawady dolphins must be mindful of the hidden dangers that lurk all around. Brilliant photographs bring Ira close to the reader, while the brief text reminds us that her future is in our hands.

As per CNN, officials have received more than 1,000 calls in recent weeks from beachgoers, tourists and residents reporting sick, dying and dead sea mammals washed ashore from Santa Barbara to San Diego County, amid a growing toxic algal bloom in the waters off the coast.

Marine-life experts believe the harmful algal bloom is to blame, though they are waiting on test results to confirm it. The algae, Pseudo-Nietzsche, produces a neurotoxin called domoic acid, which can be poisonous to seabirds and fish once ingested. It can then travel across the food chain to larger marine animals like dolphins, sea lions and even humans, according to CNN.

Humans too can get sick from domoic acid if they eat contaminated food, although seafood is tested for this toxin to prevent it from reaching dinner tables. The California Department Of Health specifically warned against eating "sport-harvested mussels, clams or scallops from Santa Barbara County" after high levels of the toxin were detected there.

Co-founder and managing director of Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute Ruth Dover said they have responded to more than 100 dead sea lions and 300 live sea lions exhibiting signs of ingesting domoic acid in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

The death toll for dolphins is now up to 100, the group said, which Greenman describes as unusual, particularly in how this bloom appears to be affecting species that typically dwell far from the shore, as per CNN. (ANI)

Thanks to the prompt action of local fishermen in Tamil Nadu, along with the forest team, three dolphins were rescued after getting entangled in fishing nets. The incident took place at Kakaladi in the Ramnathapuram District. It was captured on video and shared by IAS officer Supriya Sahu on X.

The video shows the fishermen working carefully to free the dolphins from the constricting nets. With assistance from the forest staff, the dolphin eventually swims back into the sea after rigorous pushing.

Supriya Sahu praised the efforts of the local fishermen and the forest team, emphasising the importance of community engagement in wildlife conservation. She announced that the individuals involved in the rescue would be honoured for their heroic actions.

Kakinada: In the last few years, whale sharks, porpoises, humpback whales, and spinner dolphins have been frequently spotted in the Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh. While some of these animals were stranded on the coast and successfully rescued by fishermen, a few were found dead. According to reports, in the last one year, four dolphins were rescued and sent back to the waters while three died. Human interference and mechanised trawlers are among the major causes of unfavorable conditions for dolphins.

One such incident was reported on 3 February when a Bottlenose Dolphin, which was believed to be stranded in the Buckingham Canal after it entered from the sea, was found dead allegedly due to unfavorable conditions near the Kakinada coast. On 2 February, locals sighted the stranded male dolphin in the canal at Pedapudi village near Kakinada and alerted the forest department.

According to environmentalists, January and February are the seasons when dolphins come close to the shoreline and hunt for fish when the sea is calm. One of the prime reasons is disturbance due to coastal areas and human interference.

While dolphins come to hunt fish on the shorelines, they are clever and can escape from the fishing nets, but in some cases, they get trapped. Most fishermen inform the officials who launch rescue operations to push them back into the sea. Fishermen are educated about this issue, but in rare cases, the fishermen take advantage of the stranded dolphins and kill them.

Since 2021, the fishermen in the state have noticed an increase in whale shark and dolphin sightings along the Andhra coast. According to the fishermen, until 2007, whale shark was a rare visitor to the coastal Andhra region, but in recent years, they have been spotting many.

In a study conducted by ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in 2015, it was observed that gill nets are responsible for 98.8% of the mortalities and occasional reports of incidental catch/entanglement in trawl, purse seine, shore seine, and longline have also been recorded since the 1970s. From 1976 to 2013, about 766 entanglements/incidental catches of dolphins in fishing gear have been reported in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

KOCHI: India's southern seas especially south of Kochi in the Arabian Sea are safe havens for endangered dolphins and whales. Their increase is due to adequate food and security. A census of marine mammals conducted by the Fisheries Survey of India (FSI) as part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana has found an increase in their presence. The survey conducted last November to March found 10,416 dolphins in 16 classes and 27 whales in four classes.

The FSI has expedited the survey after the US imposed a temporary ban on shrimp exports from India. The U.S. ban was because they had doubts about whether the shrimp catch was done following the measures to protect marine mammals. The US lifted the export ban after the survey report was handed over showing an increase in the number of mammals. The survey started from Kochi on 10th September 2020. 7.11 crore was spent.

The FSI team split into six and completed the survey in 4488 hours. The list was prepared by taking pictures of whales and dolphins reaching the ocean surface using high-resolution cameras. Lakshadweep sea is also a favorite place for dolphins.

On Monday evening, around 50 dolphins were washed to the shores of the small town of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. Out of the 50, as many as eight dolphins died with more than 40 struggling for life. Throughout Monday night, the locals in Tuticorin relentlessly worked hard to save these dolphins. This is not the first time in Tuticorin when the cruelty of Mother Nature has been witnessed. This is the second major incident within two years of dolphins being stranded at the beach. But it is the first time when such a large number of dolphins were seen washed ashore.

More than 83 pilot whales were seen at the shores of Tuticorin on January 13 last year. They were taken back to the sea immediately but they washed up again on the beach leaving them dead. A similar incident was seen on January 13, 1974. Officials from the Forest Department then said that approximately 70 pilot whales washed to the shores of Manapad in Tuticorin district.

Marine mammals are found in marine ecosystems around the globe. They are a diverse group of mammals with unique physical adaptations that allow them to thrive in the marine environment with extreme temperatures, depths, pressure, and darkness. Marine mammals are classified into four different taxonomic groups: cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses), sirenians (manatees and dugongs), and marine fissipeds (polar bears and sea otters).
