Five bands rocked the house.
Sarah Valeri drew a huge picture in pastels. It's hanging on our wall
now and it's beautiful.
A girl pulled her pants down on the roof. I don't know why.
A guy jumped off our roof three times. He injured up his ankle
(surprise, surprise) and had to be taken away in an ambulance. (Note
to future party attendees: IF YOU DO THIS WE WILL KICK YOU OUT! WHAT
THE FUCK!?)
All our friendly friends partied and had a good time until dawn.
It was great. And I want to thank everyone who helped make it
possible. And I also want to tell you to come out to our next party,
this Saturday. Because if you don't, who knows what kind of insanity
you'll miss?
So, the party this Saturday starts at 8pm and costs $5. It's at Last
Resort, 8-63 Astoria Blvd, Queens. And this is the lineup:
8:00 The Affected Affections
9:00 Brian Olin
10:00 Maxwell's Demon
11:00 X Plane
12:00 Begushkin
Here's some more info about the bands:
** The Affected Affections **
That's the band that I (Nechama) am in. We sound dark and indie folk
rockish, aiming for the sublime despite the fact that we're rough
around the edges. It's a lying in the gutter staring at the stars kind
of thing. Jezebel music says, "American Analog Set, Modest Mouse, and
Sunny Day Real Estate come to mind, as well as the vocal melodies of
Deftones". I've never listened to American Analog Set, but, you know,
whatever.
** Brian Olin **
Brian's got a solo, experimental, ambient act. That is, it's solo if
you don't count the voices in his head. Though his music is spooky and
gives itself up slowly, it's got a sense of humor, too. Manipulated
sounds end up sounding like chirping birds, screeching monkeys, or
tribal chanting, but against a mechanical backdrop. Basically, this
music sounds like the language of really adorable robots.
** Maxwell's Demon **
Formerly known as Green, the ne'er-do-wells composing Maxwell's Demon
have been banging out tunes together since 2001, which is to say,
since they were babies. Over the past two years they've produced two
excellent collections of music: 2005's Signal-to-Noise and 2004's
Fitter, Happier, and More Productive. The band plays a unique mixture
of noisily melodic indie rock and infectious, aggressively bouyant
punk, with a dash of blues, a sprinkling of angst, and an overall
flavor of a goddamn good time. (Frictionless Records)
** X Plane **
X Plane's shows are unpredictable. The band never knows what song
they'll begin with and the set is never the same twice. Flowing from
one song to the next, the band is like a monster DJ with three heads.
Each member improvises independently, and yet they're connected on a
higher plane... could it be the X Plane? (Sorry, that was terrible. The
X Plane is the lowest plane there is anyway.) Their songs are hard
rocking with heavy Drum & Bass beats. Really, this music will make
your head explode if you listen too closely; it's that intense and
complicated. So don't say I didn't warn you.
** Begushkin **
Begushkin is a Brooklyn band that's just released a *killer* album,
Nightly Things. Audioversity says that on it, lead singer Dan Smith
"aimed for the dark forests of the night and hit the ghoulish-looking
trees on every shot." Wow. And Other Music says that, "Amidst layers
of circular, minor-key guitar passages and a full band which includes
instruments like violin, accordion and singing saw, Smith colors his
stark songs with rich imagery that's just surreal enough to keep
things from being too dirge-y." They also like his "throaty waiver and
lyrical abstractions" and the way he mixes songbook trad-folk with
Gypsy and Middle Eastern music. It's amazing, spine-tingling stuff.

So, I hope you can make it to the show, because it's going to be
great, and if you don't come out you're a goddamn fool. I'll still
love you, of course, just a little less. Remember, Saturday October
20th at 8pm. $5 at the door. We may or may not have tons of booze
available; you should bring your own to have a certain supply. Last
Resort is located at 8-63 Astoria Blvd in Queens. Look for the green
door with the address spray-painted on it in silver. For detailed
directions see myspace.com/lastresortartspace.
Peace,
