Thanks to a great deal of support from Ward and Stefan I was able to
solve my software issues. However my stepper motors are completely
unresponsive.

According to the Gecko manual, revision 7, a continuously lit red LED
means the motor(s) have been wired improperly. The red indicator
lights on both my Gecko G203v are lit, and have been since the first
time I powered the system on.

From their website, "If the RED and GREEN indicator LEDs are lit then
the motor is miswired, the motor has a wire shorted to ground, is
shorted to another motor wire or the motor is bad."

I just wanted to know if anyone else has encountered this problem. I'd
like to avoid taking any drastic steps if they can be avoided early
on. Since both boards are showing red I have to wonder if it is
something wrong with my soldering on the laser shield (v11.11).

Update. I have removed all the wires going to the opto interrupters,
steppers, and laser from the laser shield. The indicator lights on
the Gecko drives are still red.
I found this on the Gecko site as well:

ERROR LED: The RED ERROR indicator is lit when:
1) During power-on reset for 1 second when power is first applied to
the G203V.
2) While the DISABLE input is active.
3) When there is a short-circuit on any motor output. Momentarily
activate the DISABLE input to reset.
4) During over-temperature shutdown. The LED automatically resets when
the drive temperature drops.

I'm guessing its the second one. I'll post any progress.

What happens when you disconnect the motors?

You may also want to double-check the connections to the board.
The v11.11 LasaurShield has the connector in the same order as the
G251X. Please take note that the G203V uses a slightly different pin
configuration, hence the update in the v12.02 board.

See wiring diagram for details:

Well, pretty much nothing. The indicators are still red even with the sensors and motors disconnected. Not really surprised there.

So, I can either order a pair of G251X drivers, or hard wire the G203V to the proper pins. This is what I get for not paying attention in the purchasing phase of a project. Thanks for the updated diagrams by the way, they're a big help for visual folks like myself.

Understood. I'll head to Radioshack and pick up the shielded wires and proto boards to mount them on. Thanks again for all your help on this. I hope to be up and cutting by tonight.

Its been a while since I last posted but I've been following the forums and brought my build up to ver 12.02 and solved the software issues I was having last time. The 12.08b-win app shows "connected" when I click the button. However, I am getting no indicator lights on the stepper driver boards, red green or otherwise. As per the diagram the "Disable" pins are not wired in. Do you think its possible that I've blown the drivers? I remember reading that they had a fuse somewhere.

Do you have the G203V stepper drivers?

You should always get a green light interdependently of anything
Lasersaur-related.

The manual has a good "TROUBLESHOOTING" section and lists the condition
under which no green light comes up:

Thanks! I couldn't find the manual before I went to PT this morning. I'll dig into the steppers next time I'm home long enough.
