Have been using 2 months with no problems
By L. Lynn
The initial setup required a call to HP, but after getting the printer configured on our network it's been working well ever since. In addition to having to fiddle with one cartridge to make the printer detect it, the DHCP feature didn't work. HP support gave instructions how to reset the JetDirect card and everything went fine after that.
Our old HP Laserjet 4P jams at least 1 page out of 20 (or more if you're printing a stack of Christmas letters!). This printer has had just 1 or 2 jams in 2 months and they were both easy to clear. I understand there are some tricks one can play to extend the life of the cartridges since they're so expensive, however, it may take 2 years of use for ours to get to 4000 pages so I haven't researched that yet.
It's big and bulky and makes periodic noises, but it works great and it's nice to be able to access it from any PC in the house (no host PC required)!

HP Color Laserjet Rocks!
By Gadget Geek
Everything about this printer has been awesome so far. There is a bit of hassle with pulling all of the locks off and loading the drum and then the ink cartridges...at one point the carriage seemed to jam after loading the Cyan cartridge. I just powered it off and then back on again and after about 2 minutes I opened the drum lid and it had rotated and was awaiting the yellow cartridge as expected. Everything worked fine from that point forward.
The network setup was a bit rocky. I couldn't find my crossover cable so I had to plug it into a switch that was not connected to anything else. It looked like the network interface on the printer had auto-crossover capability but I didn't want to take any chances. Then I plugged my computer into the switch so that we were both at a 169.254.xxx.xxx address. I also had to download the free configuration tool called HP Web JetAdmin which allows you to configure your printer from your computer. Once I fired up the tool after using the switch, it came up in the list and I selected CONFIGURE from actions. I set the IP address to be fixed within my local network range i.e. if your local network is 192.168.0.1 you could use an address between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.254, however you have to take into consideration your DHCP ranges and other ranges as I have 2 DHCP pools, one for wired and one for wireless which I bridge so I had to pick an address in the upper spectrum between .200-.254.
After that, I clicked SAVE and waited a few moments, powered it off, reconnected it back to my real LAN switch, moved my computer back and then powered it up and everything just worked. You can either run the install from the CD and search for the printer by MAC or IP address, or you can manually install a local printer using TCP/IP and then manually enter the IP address but you will need to have access to the driver or a compatible driver depending on your needs.
After install I printed out some photos and find them reasonably satisfying. They are not as good as when I get them printed by Kodak but they are much better looking then when printed on a color ink jet.
The black and white printouts are all perfect of course and I like the ability to either view the print cartridge levels via the HP Web JetAdmin tool or by holding the green button down for like 5 seconds which will print out a full status/settings report on the printer. I like that you can replace only the cartridge that is low vs. having to replace the whole lot each time.
