I also updated my Mac to the new Sonoma operating system. I got the same error. I was able to scan using the IJ Scan Utility Lite Ver.4.1.0 (Mac) utility that one can download from the same page as the Canon IJ Scan Utility2 download. Using the Lite version allowed me to scan. A second solution is to use the image capture application on your mac to run the scanner.
I understand, we all have our favorite programs and are used to the way they work and it's frustrating to pop it open with a new device and stuff just... is gone. I was a little lost when I bought the LiDE 400 trying to use it's utility. But, it didn't take long to get it to where I wanted. Try the Canon IJ Scan Utility that came with the scanner, it may work for you. It has cases that you can modify, then once it's set up you just click the case or press the scan button. I really didn't like it at first, but it didn't take long to get to know it. Attached is what you see when you click "Settings". I hope this helps.
I have an old Canon LiDE 90 scanner that works with no problem under Windows 7. Currently I am in a process of switching from Windows (7) to Ubuntu (18.10). One of my problems is that I cannot use my scanner in Ubuntu. When I connect this scanner to Ubuntu it is not recognized by the scanner software that comes with Ubuntu. I know that my scanner is not supported by the Sane Project in Linux: -project.org/unsupported/canon-lide-90.html
However, my comment above (to run the Canon utility in a virtualized old Windows OS) still is my preferred method. With this method you are using the real software from Canon and thus you can fully utilize the potential of this scanner.
I've bought a new Canon lide 220 scanner. When I press one of the buttons on the scanner, the Canon IJ Scan Utility 2 opens, but nothing happens. Everything is configured correctly in the application. When I press one of the 'Software buttons' in the Canon IJ Scan Utility 2, I get an error message: cannot communicate with the scanner. Code:15,156,0'.
They're still 'buggy', sometimes they don't work, but if I make one scan through the 'software buttons' on the IJScan utility, the buttons seem to work afterwards. I also experienced an issue where the physical buttons on the scanner would only worked if the IJScan Utility on my Mac was the application currently on 'focus' on the Mac, not if some other program was on top.
If you need a flatbed scanner for office docs and photos, and you also need to scan film negatives and slides, the Epson Perfection V600 is your best option. We loved the results we got with both negatives and slides.
