There is a cable containing three very thin wires which goes into the side of my distributor. I think this is called the hall sensor?? The black connector/plug which fits into the body of the distributor apparently came loose and the wires are sheared off. If I can get to them I think I can fix it. I have several questions.
1. I can see how to loosen the bolt that holds the distributor into the engine. I have the coil wire off and can take the bolt out (I haven't yet). If I remove this bolt, can I slide the distributor out, work on it, and JUST slide it back in?
2. Is it possible to get to those wires? In other words, if I remove the distributor from the engine block, is it possible to then dis-assemble the distributor and repair those wires, re-assemble and the world will be a happy place? I can't tell if those are retaining rings (#15) or some type of washer and how they are held in place, does this all just slide apart? It can't be...
3. I am certainly NOT going to crank the motor while the distributor is out but what about the shaft on the distributor itself? Will it rotate and throw off the timing?
4. I have heard this is a common problem but I am new to the SAAB world. I cannot find a re-build kit but the fix looks easy enough, the difficulty is getting to the area. If there is a re-build kit available and you know where it is, please let me know where I can get it.
This is a Bosch distributor but I don't know if there are different distributors within this model year. !989 Saab 900 SPG (turbo, hatchback, manual transmission).
