Hello all!. Thought I would try here since the audirvana forum does not have many active participants. I have a late 2012 mac mini running a silflex toslink mini cable from the mac and into my Neko audio DAC mkII. The audirvana program does not seem to recognize the existence of my external dac through the headphone out, so will i need to get a usb/spdif converter cable like a musical fidelity v link in order for the software to allow me to run the mac in direct mode? right now it seems as if i am stuck with the default output.
JWN Tube Amps--90w and 15w per channel respectively, in pentode, with Jim Nicholls' modified see-saw circuitry. The headphone amp uses 4 6V6 GT Magnavox tubes, and the big amp sports 8 6P3S-E Sovteks.
Ha! There is indeed internal sound. got my grados plugged into the mac. Sounds very good. That is a very nice sounding internal dac. i'm now convinced i will need to go usb to run in direct or integer mode.
WELL, just got an email from Damien in which he says my DAC should appear on the list of preferred devices when I press change under audio system in the audirvana program. As I replied, I get 2 options and 2 only--built in output and HDMI. The built in output is the internal apple dac, as indicated when i select the debug option. My DAC does not show up on the list AT ALL.
My understanding, based on previous toslink connection between Mac Mini and a DACMagic DAC, was that the 'built-in' output option IS the option to choose. For some reason OS-X (?) only shows this option for an optical connection, unlike when the DAC is connected via USB. If connected via USB, then you should see your DAC named as an option, both under Audio Midi and Audirvana.
If using Toslink/optical out, Audirvana won't see the DAC, it'll just use/show 'Built In Output'. Direct Mode, I believe, is not dependent on USB, only Integer Mode. Looking at your DAC on the web and doesn't appear to have USB so you'd definitely need a USB/SPDIF converter for Integer Mode, but just know you're adding another 'link in the chain' so YMMV.
This is not system preferences for the mac osx, but rather preferences menu in the audirvana program itself. as the mac mini states, the optical out supports both analog and digital out, so it should be able to function in direct mode and read my DAC, which it is not doing.
The headphone/line out port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output, use a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug. For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone or a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter.
OK, put simply, I think you'll find your DAC IS working, even though it doesn't show as an option. BUT, be aware that OS X restricts max output to 96kbps, regardless of your DAC's ability to output higher via another operating system (e.g Windows) via Optical/Toslink. You will have to connect via USB or Coax to 'see' your DAC and to output at higher sampling rates.
On the other hand, I just went to system preferences in the mac menu, and deselected sound output for optical, opened up audirvana and cued up Chucho Valdes Chucho's Steps in 24 bit 96kHz, and I am getting a wonderful sound out of my stereo, whereas previously, with sound output for digital out on, it seemed a bit brittle and tinny in the upper register, with a lack of air. Now, the music breathes, has more texture, body, and heft. i think you may be correct it's just working...
Select the built in output in Audirvana. The name of your DAC, as others have said, will not be listed but your DAC will indeed be doing its thing. It's a quirk of the Apple OS. Others, including myself (with the Schiit Bifrost), have done this. Have faith.
Whew.. I think I will be just fine for a while with the 96khz limit and otherwise ripping my cd's. I'll also spend some time uploading vinyl. I'm impressed how ripped CDs sound just as good as CDs playing through my transport, if not better in some instances.
Time to simply enjoy. I've not had the opportunity to hear the Neko but I understand it is one fine DAC. When upgraditis strikes in the future you will find plenty of options to further your sound. Have fun. Welcome to the forum btw.
Thanks. The Neko replaced a rega. Had a chance to a/b through the neko loaner program. got the Neko for 1K and sold the rega for $700. not a bad deal. The Neko enhances the 3 dimensional soundscape of the JWN tube amp.
Am listening to a Bobby Hutcherson 24bit 96kHz download and it sounds amazing. One thing I like is the detail and presence at low volume levels. Whatever the jitter rate coming into the DAC, as Wesley Miaw has indicated to me, the Neko is durable enough to deal with it quite nicely. The audirvana software is also performing flawlessly.
Further revelations--Hooked the DAC directly to my little headphone amp just for kicks. Sunday morning, neighbors, etc. Jim included a volume knob on it for a little extra when he built it, but to be on the safe side I switched to software control of volume. Listening to Chucho Valdes grammy winning effort in 24/96 kHz is the best this little amp has sounded. At 15w per channel, I will now need to investigate a pair of efficient desktop speakers to go with it.
I'm having a similar problem. I have the free version (original). In audio preferences it notes output, hdmi and my King Rex converter. I get audio for the first 2 settings but no audio output when I set it to King Rex.
Is it possible to keep the program running when the lid is closed on a MacBook I Have tried keeping the hard drive on and other functions disabled but always when closing the lid the program disconnects I assume it is the network connection that needs to be always on?
Hi have tied the amphetamine app and if I enable the lock of sleep functions and indefinite time on the app it appears to work I know this means the screen is on when closed but as long as not too long ie days it should be ok
Ps anyone tried successfully to side load the audirvana remote app onto a Astell kern sp 25 mk 2
Just for info ventura 13.2 will be released on Monday or Tuesday next week. I am currently using the RC with no issues. The release notes states the following " Fixed a regression in Ventura 13.1 that prevented daemons from being registered with SMAppService. Also fixed, toggling items on or off in Login Items may cause items to be ungrouped or deleted. (102938063)" so I would suggest you update and see if this fixes your issue
See my post in response to your post under legacy installations. I installed 3.5.50 to check your issue and it runs fine with real time control of audio units working fine. Obviously my installation of 3.5.50 was done after installation of 13.2, did you install 13.2 after an existing install of 3.5.50? If so perhaps trying to erase 3.5.50 and then re-installing may solve your problem.
Here version 3.55 is almost working normally.
I no longer have that error, but every time I start Audirvana 3.55 this message appears.
I press Enter and then it works perfectly.
I already uninstalled and installed again, but every time I start this message appears.
If all else fails and you are familiar with re-installing your Mac, software and data then you can try re-setting your mac to factory defaults AFTER making sure you have all your apps and data copied to a back-up disk.
This will erase all data and apps on your hard disk and reset your system to having just macOS on your computer. Basically all audirvana files, plist entries and startup entries will be removed (along with all your apps and data)
After 20 years of using a mac portable as a daily work and pleasure machine I have learned that whenever I install an update to macOS I need to erase my system and do a full re-install to ensure no issues with apps arise which can often be the case with just an update of an OS. An extreme approach, but one that has resulted in me never having application problems after an update.
