How anyone worked through the exercises in this chapter?

Chapter 6 was a bit of a slog for me... in the sense that I had a hard time understanding what the author was doing, exactly. I got through it, but I didn't fully understand what he was getting at. I'll be interested in hearing others' thoughts.
