FROM:            Stephen Sprang, Associate Provost for Graduate Education

RE:                  Bertha Morton Fellowships and Scholarships-Call for nominations

            DATE:                        February 17, 2012

______________________________________________________________________

Please read the following information carefully.

The Graduate Council is pleased to announce its call for nominations for the 2012-2013 Bertha Morton Fellowships and Scholarships.  For the coming year, each fellowship will carry an award of $5,000; each scholarship will carry an award of $3,000.  Please encourage your graduate students to apply.  Besides cash value, the awards honor your department as well as your students.

By virtue of the number of students in your graduate program, you are entitled to nominate five student(s) for a Bertha Morton award.  Students in two-year master’s programs can be nominated in their second year.

Once again, the Bertha Morton Scholarship will be an electronic process.  Kelly Speer, the Graduate School’s technology coordinator, developed the online process and she will be available to faculty and graduate students if there are any questions or if anyone needs assistance.

You can contact Kelly at x2701 or by e-mail at kelly...@umontana.edu.

All graduate students will receive an e-mail announcement of the Bertha Morton Scholarship and Fellowship.  They will be invited to apply to their home departments for consideration as a Bertha Morton nominee.

Students will be sent the following instructions to apply for the award:

a)      Complete the two page only application (word document template) available at http://www.umt.edu/grad/Financial_Information/Graduate_Scholarship_Fellowships.php.  No supplementary materials will be considered.

b)      Submit application via e-mail to Shonna Trowbridge, tr...@cfc.umt.edu for the Graduate Committee to review on 4:00 p.m. on  March 19th

The program faculty instructions are as follows:

  1. Faculty in the departments and schools will review the submitted applications and choose which applicant(s) to nominate based on the number allowed (see above).  The student’s advisor or the department chair will fill out the nomination form on the web at: http://www.umt.edu/grad/Financial_Information/Graduate_Scholarship_Fellowships.php.   The entire online application which consists of the student’s application and a departmental letter of nomination/recommendation will then be submitted electronically to Shonna Trowbridge tr...@cfc.umt.edu by 4:00 p.m. March 19th.  Please note that nominating documents should make no reference to or comparison with other nominees.

  1. The Graduate School will electronically present the student’s application, departmental letter of nomination/recommendation and an unofficial UM transcript (the Graduate School will provide the transcript) to the Graduate Council.

Following are the rules for the Bertha Morton Scholarship/Fellowship awards process:

  1. Nominations will be accepted from departments and schools (Shonna will submit) until 4:30 PM on Friday, March 23rd 2012To be eligible for nomination, the student must have been admitted to a graduate program by this date, and the student must be scheduled to enroll during the fall of 2012.

  1. The Graduate Council will evaluate and rank all nominations for scholarship or fellowship awards.  Nomination documentation and recommendations should be grounded on the student’s academic record and accomplishments in one or more of the following areas:
    1. Honors and awards
    2. Professional certifications and credentials
    3. Evidence of research and other academic achievements
    4. Evidence of professional and community achievements
    5. Additional achievements and creative activities

      3.   A student who previously received a Bertha Morton award and seeks an additional nomination can only claim accomplishments not specified on the awarded application.

Bertha Morton was a Helena, Montana native who worked most of her adult life for the Internal Revenue Service in Helena.  She was not an alumnus of The University of Montana, nor did she actually attend any university.  She worked hard and saved her money.  When she died in 1977, she left a large part of her estate to the UM Foundation because she desired to encourage and help serious students obtain an education here.  Bertha Morton fellowships and scholarships have subsequently become our most prestigious awards for graduate students.  I urge you to continue this tradition and identify and nominate your most impressive candidates.  Please call me at x2572 if you have questions or if your program decides not to nominate candidates.

I appreciate your cooperation and patience with the new electronic Bertha Morton procedure.  Again, if you have any questions or need assistance with the process please contact Kelly in the Graduate School, and she will be happy to assist you.

Thank you.
