This mid-WWI Topical Budget newsreel sees 'Our Day' badges being sold on the streets of Britain to members of the armed services, in aid of servicemen wounded in the conflict. The short item provides a rare opportunity to see on film black soldiers who served King and country at that time. No apparent racism is shown towards the two soldiers, one of whom smiles at the camera, while women pin the charity badges to their coats.
Beltrán produced the film, Source of the Wound, as a way to teach the concept of historical trauma in the online MSW@Denver course Macro Social Work Theory and Practice. Historical trauma is a collective, cumulative, intergenerational wounding that results from catastrophic events, such as the forced removal, relocation and boarding schools experienced by Native and Indigenous peoples, Beltrán explains in the film. She describes how science is showing that experiences in our environment can alter the genetic material surrounding our DNA and that these changes can be passed down through generations.
The film's protagonists, true civic leaders, endure suicide bombings and checkpoints to meet with militants on both sides, the wounded and apathetic masses. Audiences are left with a sense that the gulf between Israelis and Palestinians is at once bridgeable and tremendously wide.
Korn fans now have a chance to see singer Jonathan Davis in a different environment, as the rocker's recent short film, 'Wounded Warriors,' is streaming online. The 17-minute film follows Davis as he tours Germany's Ramstein Air Base.
"Reality's a bitch," says Davis in the film. "You're watching the news and you're seeing everything that's going on and It doesn't really hit you until you actually get there and see the actual faces and the actual equipment and you see what's going on. I really do think that people should go meet these guys and see what goes on. [They'd] be a little bit more appreciative of what they have."
