A medical laboratory or clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests are conducted out on clinical specimens to obtain information about the health of a patient to aid in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.[1] Clinical medical laboratories are an example of applied science, as opposed to research laboratories that focus on basic science, such as found in some academic institutions.

Medical laboratories vary in size and complexity and so offer a variety of testing services. More comprehensive services can be found in acute-care hospitals and medical centers, where 70% of clinical decisions are based on laboratory testing.[2] Doctors offices and clinics, as well as skilled nursing and long-term care facilities, may have laboratories that provide more basic testing services. Commercial medical laboratories operate as independent businesses and provide testing that is otherwise not provided in other settings due to low test volume or complexity.[3]

In most developed countries, there are two main types of lab processing the majority of medical specimens. Hospital laboratories are attached to a hospital, and perform tests on their patients. Private (or community) laboratories receive samples from general practitioners, insurance companies, clinical research sites and other health clinics for analysis. For extremely specialised tests, samples may go to a research laboratory. Some tests involve specimens sent between different labs for uncommon tests. For example, in some cases it may be more cost effective if a particular laboratory specializes in a less common tests, receiving specimens (and payment) from other labs, while sending other specimens to other labs for those tests they do not perform.

Medical Laboratory Departments in some countries are exclusively directed by a specialized Doctor laboratory Science. In others, a consultant, medical or non-medical, may be the head the department. In Europe and some other countries, Clinical Scientists with a Masters level education may be qualified to head the department. Others may have a PhD and can have an exit qualification equivalent to medical staff (e.g., FRCPath in the UK).

Clinical laboratories are supplied by other multinational companies which focus on materials and equipment, which can be used for both scientific research and medical testing. The largest of these is Thermo Fisher Scientific.[27] In 2016, global life sciences instrumentation sales were around $47 billion, not including consumables, software, and services.[27] In general, laboratory equipment includes lab centrifuges, transfection solutions, water purification systems, extraction techniques, gas generators, concentrators and evaporators, fume hoods, incubators, biological safety cabinets, bioreactors and fermenters, microwave-assisted chemistry, lab washers, and shakers and stirrers.[28]

Tuition
Tuition for the medical laboratory science internship is currently $5,000 for both in-state and out-of-state students. This fee does not include housing, certification exam fee, or other miscellaneous expenses. For refund policies or additional information, call the BMC School of Medical Laboratory Science at 413-447-2580.

The Medical Laboratory Technology program at Cuyahoga Community College leads to an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree that gives students an integrated curriculum of classroom work and an abundance of hands-on, professional experience. The program offers students a solid foundation in mathematics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, medical laboratory procedures, and medical ethics. This, along with the integrated liberal arts/general education courses and a 576-hour clinical field experience in a N.E. Ohio or Cleveland area hospital, results in a high quality, well-rounded program.

We are pleased that you have chosen Coastal Alabama Community College to prepare you for a career as a medical laboratory technologist. Our mission is to prepare graduates to perform routine medical laboratory procedures and tests and to apply preset strategies to record and analyze data. The following is information regarding application to the Associate in Applied Science Degree program for Medical Laboratory Technology.

This is a daytime program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of clinical laboratory scientists/medical technologists, to perform routine medical laboratory procedures and tests and to apply preset strategies to record and analyze data. Includes instruction in general laboratory procedures and skills; laboratory mathematics; medical computer applications; interpersonal and communications skills; and the basic principles of hematology, medical microbiology, immunohematology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis.

Chemistry related fields include the pharmaceutical sciences, food sciences, biotechnology, biomanufacturing, nanotechnology, environmental sciences, engineering and many others. Our students pursue careers in chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, laboratory technician and other health or physical science related careers. The degree presents curriculum in two major concentrations; one in Chemistry and the other in Biochemistry. Thus students can select the concentration appropriate to their majors.

The Registered Nursing (RN) Program at LATTC combines nursing and general education courses with selected laboratory experiences during which students provide nursing care to clients in hospitals and other health care facilities. Nursing courses include medical surgical nursing, geriatric nursing, maternal child health nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, pharmacology, and nursing management and leadership and preceptorship. The program is designed to be completed within four semesters after admission.

Semen analysis may be useful in both clinical and research settings, for investigating male fertility status as well as monitoring spermatogenesis during and following male fertility regulation and other interventions. This manual provides updated, standardized,evidence-based procedures and recommendations for laboratory managers, scientists and technicians to follow in examining human semen in a clinical or research setting. Detailed protocols for routine, optional and research tests are elaborated.

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) provide urgent care in any location or while transporting patients in ambulances or helicopters. As first responders in the delivery of emergency services, these men and women apply life-saving medical techniques to the injured. EMTs possess the ability to manage both physical and psychological distress in challenging situations. EMTs receive varying levels of certification depending on their cumulative training and experience. In California, paramedic is the highest level of EMT certification.

The Veterinary Technology Program is designed to prepare entry-level veterinary technicians via classroom study, laboratory, and clinical practice with fundamental veterinary technician skills. After successful completion of the program, you should be able to successfully complete the licensing requirements of your state. This program will work toward meeting the needs of the State of Nebraska for well qualified veterinary technicians to perform duties under the scope of the Veterinary Medicine Practice Act.

PubMed indexes over 4,000 biomedical, nursing, dentistry and related journals, with over 21 million citations in MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE and related databases. PubMed is produced by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and provides links between article citations and relevant data in other NCBI ENTREZ databases, including Nucleotide and Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes, Taxonomy, and others.

Proximity searching is available, which allows you to find terms within specified distances from each other.

Includes journal literature, 1950-present; selected online books. This version uses Outside Tool to link to resources at U-M Flint.

CoCites, "a citation-based method for searching scientific literature," is a Chrome- and Firefox-compatible browser plugin you can use with PubMed.
