Forover 50 years, Indiana University Indianapolis has led the way in educating healthcare leaders in Indiana and beyond. Our program has been fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) since 1983.
Our graduates go on to build successful careers in health systems, hospitals, physician practices, health maintenance organizations, long-term care facilities, and health insurance organizations. Many CEOs of Indiana-based health organizations are graduates of the Fairbanks School of Public Health MHA program.
The Master of Health Administration (MHA) offers the flexibility you need to complete your degree. You have the option of pursuing an in-person/hybrid experience or accelerated 8-week semesters online. The in-person and online options are each 42 credits and all courses are taught by the same faculty.
"The Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health MHA program uses constant feedback from health care leaders, alumni, students and faculty to maintain a contemporary curriculum. IU MHA students, as a result, are prepared with the knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences to excel in leadership roles in the State of Indiana and throughout the United States."
To help our prospective students understand the possibilities a degree in Health Administration offers, we've asked several alumni to share the career opportunities they have had since graduating. Browse the alumni career profiles to see what our graduates are up to.
All MHA candidates must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 42 credits. The curriculum includes required health administration and practical experience courses. The Master of Health Administration focuses on five core areas, including understanding the context of the healthcare system, leadership and professionalism, decision making, technical skills and self-development.
MHA 10. Explain important issues in healthcare including the need for reform, major changes that have occurred, and proposals being considered for the U.S. healthcare delivery system.
The Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health offers the opportunity to pursue an MHA in combination with two other degrees. Our joint degree programs are intended to prepare leaders who will offer a combination of analytical thinking and broad understanding to their industry.

Applying for admission to a Master's degree or a Graduate Certificate program requires an applicant to take a number of steps. Allowing ample time to prepare the application reduces stress and is key to a smooth submission process. Below is detailed information on preparing and completing your graduate online application. Following these guidelines will ensure prompt and efficient processing of your graduate application.
3. Request Three Current Recommendations for Admission: (Name, address, phone and email are needed.) Three recommendations for graduate admission are required. Individuals writing your recommendations should be your present or former professors or instructors and academic advisors, or managers, supervisors, or project leaders you report to professionally, who are most able to comment on your academic performance, intellectual abilities, scholastic skills and aptitudes, and work ethics, if relevant. Recommendations from friends, peers, family members or relatives, and acquaintances are not acceptable. Once you submit your online application, a computer generated request for recommendations will be sent directly to the recommenders. Online recommendations are strongly preferred. However, if a recommender wishes to complete a paper recommendation, you may send this fillable form.
4. Write Your Statement of Purpose: Write a 400-word essay summarizing your academic background, professional experience, if relevant, and your educational goals and objectives. In addition and very importantly, describe and highlight your specific area(s) of interest and focus in graduate study.
6. Take the English Language Proficiency Test and Order Scores to be Sent Directly to IUPUI (school code 1325): International degree-seeking applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English proficiency. The Graduate School accepts the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Pearson Test of English (PTE) for admission. The Graduate School will routinely waive the English proficiency requirement for applicants who have received a degree within the past 24 months from a school where English is the primary language of instruction in one of the recognized English speaking countries.
Non-Indiana University students are very welcome in our online French and Italian courses. (See our course descriptions in the Student Portal here.) You must provide documentation of completing the pre-requisite course before enrolling in an upper level course. Auditing language classes is not permitted.
Unlike some courses that you could sign up for anytime, our online courses do follow the IU calendar for the traditional Spring, Summer and Fall schedules. Each course proceeds at the pace determined by the instructor and requires keeping up with that pace. Visit the Indiana University academic calendar for class dates.
For any OPEN Program or non-IU student registering for an online course with FRIT: please make sure you are admitted to IU in the Online Foreign Language Program (code UDIV0/FLANUGDEND) to ensure you will pay the lowest available tuition rates.
Once your visiting/non-degree application has been submitted and the application has been approved, you will be issued an Indiana University ID number. With this IUID, you can obtain an IU computing username and set your passphrase.
After your permission has been entered (if applicable) and you have your IU computing account, you can log in and register for classes through
one.iu.edu. Type class registration in the search box to get to the correct application.
If you have previous language experience and are unsure of the appropriate level to enroll in, we recommend that you take the online placement test. There is a non-refundable charge of $54 to take the test, and this will be charged to your bursar account. Note that you can only take the exam after you have been issued an IUID and IU computing username.
If for some reason you are unable to take the placement test or believe you have the prerequisite course equivalent, you can arrange for time to talk with Dr. Serafin (in person or by phone/Zoom) to determine the appropriate course level. You will be asked to provide a copy of your transcript and past syllabus showing completion of the prerequisite course and its contents.
