As cast call for the 2010 season quickly approaches, I find myself
reflecting on the last few years and my part in the Louisiana
Renaissance Festival cast.

It was March, some years ago, when I first wandered onto the faire
grounds for cast call. I did not know anyone affiliated with the
festival and felt somewhat out of place as I entered the building
where we were supposed to meet. I was greeted with a hearty “welcome”
and offered a seat next to a few people that seemed to know what was
going on. It turns out they were cast members from years past and I
began to relax knowing that I was in good hands. I was promised that
if I put in the effort, I would reap the rewards by the end of the
faire season. I decided that day to join the cast and give everything
I could possibly give.

With each step, there was someone to guide me. Workshop after workshop
I learned something new. I might not have known it at the time but I
was learning with everything I did. Each game and exercise had a
purpose. Soon the faces of strangers became those of friends.
Friends eventually became family.

Fast forward to present day. I can truthfully say that I was not led
astray. You get out of cast exactly what you put into it. I gave
everything and these are just a few of the memorable moments I have
been blessed with.

I have made many smile but only two cry.

I have learned. I have taught.

I have ached and continued on regardless of the pain... I had to make
them smile.

I have cut fabric. I have learned to sew. (sort of)

I have been hugged by patrons and their children. I have returned that
kindness.

I was given a rock for it was all he had to give me. He was four.

“Pull mommy pull” is quite funny... especially when you are not
pulling the wagon.

I held her hand while she stole my hat and cackled with glee.

I saw a man shed a tear as I sat and played with his daughter that
could neither walk nor speak.

Sam was lost. I found his dad.

I was a Rogue. Kids love outlaws.

Wanted posters are a great idea except when kids have wooden swords.

I have danced with a Queen.

I have laughed until my stomach hurt.

I have been flogged. Happy birthday to you my lady.

I have been allowed to share in the most personal of moments with a
few special people.

I am 8 days away from the beginning of another season as part of the
festival cast. To be completely honest, I started working on things
in January. I am eager to see my faire family again. It has only
been a few months since we last laughed together but it seems so much
longer.

To anyone that has ever dreamed of being a part of something like
this, now is your chance. March 13th, 2010 is cast call for the 11th
season of the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. If you have never
stepped foot on a stage but want to learn improv-theater, we will
teach you. If you are a seasoned professional, we welcome you. Cast
call starts promptly at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13th. We will
be meeting in the pub at the far end of the lake so arrive early and
you won’t have to run. Bring your questions and get to know us. Join
us and step back into the 16th century as part of this years cast.

By the way... I still have the rock from the little boy.
