Section 1 Reading Material and Study group in CT

The CLARB website recommended the book <Project Management for Design Professionals> by Ramroth, did you guys find this book helpful /necessary or would it be alright to take section 1 without reading this book.

Also I will be taking section 1 in December, so if anyone is interested in studying together in Connecticut let me know:)

Hi,

I think the Project Management book is one of the most enjoyable reads you will find on the CLARB reading list, one of the least expensive, and one of the most useful for your own work as a professional.

Unless you know have a good grasp on the concepts of project management such as work breakdown structure, PERT, and contract types then I recommend reading it. 

If you review the topics listed for Section 1 per CLARB's orientation guide, you will see that PM book covers many of these topics but is probably a bit less critical than, the Hinze book. Some of the concepts covered in Hinze are covered in a bit more simple terms in Ramroth's book. Screenshot of CLARB's sec 1 study guide from 2017 orientation guide is attached.

Welcome to the wonderful world of out of print books. If you look at the back cover you will even see that it sold for $34.95. Painful that people know they have a captive audience and demand a premium for that. I looked around for ebook rentals and didn’t find anything either.

On the plus side, I took section 1 and passed my first time and didn’t read anything on project admin. NOW, I wish that I had mind you while I was taking the test because there were quite a few questions on it, but either I was able to logic out the answer or there weren’t enough to kill my score (wish they would give your passing score like they do failing). So anything you can find that gives a “cheaper” overview of project admin will probably be more than sufficient. ALSO, take both parts A and B of the lareprep.com practice tests and study what you missed. That’s what really got me through section 1.

Wish I could provide more help on the op question but unless you can find a copy at your local library or have $300 burning a hole in your pocket, you can potentially pass section 1 without this book.

Wow, I apologize! When I was preparing for section 1 in 2014 I just went online and bought it for $35.

If I had known I would have bought a case for my retirement savings!! :p

Joel...Thanks for the link! I was having the same issue finding this book. Scribd currently has a 30 day free trial so I was able to download the pdf and convert it to an e-book for free.

I found a free pdf online and just finished reading it cover to cover. It's focus is more on the project management of design teams rather than bidding, construction or maintenance. It also has lots of good personal experience stories making it a fast and really good read. I would definitely recommend it.

Section 1 doesn’t have all that much on the law that it would be worth it to read a book called “business law for LAs”. You would be better served reading that Project Admin book as there are more question regarding that then laws in section 1. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks. I guess I will change my reading order. I read that the Business Law of LA book was a better source than the Hinze book, which I am not able to find since I moved. Packed and lost track of it, just received the LA Law book today ($100.00). Thanks again for the book link.
