So, I failed section 3 a second time. It’s getting reeeeeally expensive to become registered...

I want to get opinions on study material. Books, sections of books, tests, etc. I’ve taken the LAREprep tests tons and always get 90-100. I’ve also seen that the material on those tests hasn’t been very similar to test material from 2018.

I have LaGro and LAGS, but I’m not sure what would be best to pick out of them. ANY help is appreciated.

Shawn,

I found this very helpful study guide here in this LARE group (thank you to the angel who originally posted it) and I just passed Section 3 with it.

Each step is a step forward, even if it's your third or fourth time! Cheers!

Which books did you find helpful for Sec 3? I have LaGro, Russ, and Hopper. I wasn't sure if I needed both Timesaver Standards and the Sustainable Sites book. I know I'll need TSS for Sec. 4 so I might as well get it anyways but I wasn't sure if Calkins is worth the money.

Thanks!

So what did you do to actually study from this set of notes?? Just read it a lot? Or have someone quiz you?

Someone clearly put a lot of time into developing this document as a personal study aid.

THANKS for re-posting!  i have failed exams multiple times, its hard to try and improve if you have no clue what area you are not doing well in on the exams. i wish it was like the architect exam at LEAST they give you a (%) per general topic so you know where to study more. So frustrating and soooo expensive its almost like they DONT want people to get licensed!

Hi all,

Just passed section 3. For those who want advice on what to study I have to say the two attached pdfs in this thread were great resources to get started. From there I read through chapters in the TSS and LAGS I found relative to the points in the orientation guide. I didn't use any of the other suggested books. I did take both of the LARE prep tests which I think helped in understanding what the hot spot and drag/drop questions would look like. For me the multiple choose questions were harder and took longer than the hot spot/drag and drag/drop questions. But I am definitely more of a visual person. Hope this helps!

Mary...what chapters in TSS did you study or find the most important?

Thanks!

Hi, Mary,

I have the same questions about the chapters from TSS and LAGS, which chapters are more important?

Does Chapter 3 have any questions about planting materials and hardscape materials???

Thanks!

Hey,
There are not specific questions about planting materials and hardscape. You have to be able to calculate cubic feet of mulch or gravel, but most of the questions have the specifics of what they want to know in the question. Sorry I cant think of an example.

A three-foot high single orifice jet in a 10' x 10' square pool of water would be most appropriately used
to provide:
A. "white noise" in a downtown urban park
B. a focal point in an intimate garden
C. a fine mist easily influenced by wind
D. a dramatic effect of air and water mixing

One of the old Sect.B practice tests has this question (above), however the answer that is given (B) is different from what it directly says in the study guide (A). I've seen errors in both and wonder if anyone knows which is most correct in the eyes of LARE? Thanks

*my thought personally is it should be B, because it is single orifice would emphasize one focal point. Also 10"x10" seems more like the scale of a garden than a downtown urban park... although on second thought, there actually are downtown urban parks of all scales even if they are typically larger in scale. Probably not enough info given in the question to make this assertion.

The good news is yes def A or B. Notice it says 10’ is the size of the fountain not the space itself. That coupled with the “square” clue would lean me toward A. A 10’ fountain with a 3’ jet might be quite big and kinda blah for an intimate garden. But who knows.

Google “small foundation in intimate garden” and then google “small fountain in urban downtown” to get an idea what it may look like and see which one looks the closest to a 10x10 fountain with 3’ high single jet. Overall on Section 3 these types of questions lack enough context/info that you usually have to choose between two decent options.

Hey Shawn, I just failed section 3 for the second time. How are you doing? Did you take section 3 again? Any luck? If not, would you like to share study materials? I really want to pass this thing and be done but damn you make a great point, the test is so freaking expensive!

This is great and straight to the point on the subjects to study, reminds me of a Cliffnote version for what to study.  Wish we can all collaborate and extract the best and most relevant materials out of all the recommended books and create a very focused study material.

A ten by ten pool is way overkill for an "intimate" garden.

Would anyone be able to recommend specific chapters of TSS? It’s such a huge book and I’m stumped.

Thanks!

I used the list of chapters Ray Freeman suggested:

Harris, Charles, and Nichols Dines, Time Savers Standards for Landscape  Architecture,  2nd ed., McGraw-Hill Publishing Co., NY, NY, 1998.

Section 210: Spatial Standards

Section 220: Energy and Resource Conservation

Section 240: Outdoor Accessibility

Sections 340-342: Circulation

Section 550:  Plants and Planting Division

800: Materials

Thanks for posting JD! I used this list as well, but couldn't seem to dig it up. I thought it was a longer list? Maybe I'm thinking of Ray's list for LAGS chapters. For example, Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is not covered in TSS but there is a good summary in LAGS.

Pretty sure that's Ray's complete list for TSS. Here's his list for LAGS:

Hi MA,
I could find only 1 pdf in this thread. I searched the entire thread but couldn't find the second pdf.
Can you please post both the PDFs once again. it will be really helpful.

This is a very helpful thread! Thanks everyone!  I too would be very appreciative if the second PDF were reposted.

I am taking the exam Sep 19th.  I have TSS, and the Sustainable Sites Handbook - does anyone have a recommended study selection from Sustainable Sites?

Thanks!
