Hey LARE people! I passed Section 3 in September so figured I’d share my notes here because I feel like the exam was unnecessarily difficult for a multiple-choice test on design. I was actually shocked by how difficult it was compared to Sections 1 and 2, even after reading posts in this group about how difficult Section 3 was. The graphic questions were A LOT more complex/time-consuming than I anticipated and trickier than any of the practice vignettes.

I do feel like a lot of this test is just about reasoning, deciphering what CLARB means, thinking about how the question relates to health/safety, and making your educated guess.

I used the test-taking strategy I read about in this group of going through the exam and answering all the multiple-choice questions first and flagging all of the graphic questions. This took me about 2 hours. Then I went through and answered all the graphic/vignette questions, which took about 1 hour. Then I had ~30 minutes remaining to review all the other flagged questions I was unsure about and turned the test in with like 60 seconds remaining. I highly recommend taking the test this way.

I passed 3 in September and thought that the graphics questions were easier then I expected.  Sort of so simple that it was very easy to over think them.  I changed a few when I went back to check them because when I reread them and didn't over think the answer was basic.  That could have just been the questions on my test but it is just something to be aware of.

In this persons study guide, there are a lot of dimensions associated with setbacks, etc. This stuff is pre-2013. Know about various types of setbacks and what they are for as well as dimensional standards in general associated with roads and parking, etc. But those specific numbers are no longer valid. OTOH, any dimensions associated with ADA are valid!!

Those notes are very helpful. Does anyone know if there are notes like this for section 4?

Hi L!

Thank you so much for sharing your notes!
I skipped through your notes before I took my Section 3 on Dec, 11th and it helps tremendously!

I really appreciate your kindness and it actually inspired me that I will share my Section 2 notes which I think is done well.
Best of luck and happy holidays!

I'm glad these notes were helpful and good luck to all who took the December test! And yes Ray is correct, some of my notes on the LARE Reference Guide are no longer applicable (I took those notes before knowing what was still relevant from that document). I haven't looked for any Section 4 notes in this group yet... but am planning to take the exam in April and may upload my notes once I pass.

Section 4 notes were posted a year or two ago. Since then I have taken the test and updated them as I went through the books and reference material. The document is too heavy for an email attachement. Here is the link to the drive with both PDF and word copies in case any of you feel like adding your research to this document and share it back to the group when you can.

Hey SD. The link said it'd require permission to access, so I'm going to request it from you. Thanks!

I took the exam in Dec and failed for sec 3.  I did not follow the exam taking guide of doing the multiple choice first.. then the graphics.. and I ran out of time.  Not going to make that mistake twice. I studied a lot and found a lot of the graphic questions hard and ambiguous in some cases.. abstract.    Hierarchy and safety I think is the best way to go about it.. Reviewing a lot of master, urban, and site planning for this go around, I felt that was my weakest part of my knowledge
