I wish all of you luck the next few weeks as we take out respective exams. If any of you can and would be kind to help me with any.. any tips that he led you pass section 3 please please do... I would greatly appreciae it.
Thank you

Veronica, I recommend making a chart before you start your exam.  It will have 4 column that you will write the number to each question under.  One column is for answers you are sure of, you don't have to come back to double check these.  Column 2 is for 50/50 guesses where you have ruled out the other answers, and I recommend you write down which two choice you were between.  When you go back to double check your answers, start with these as you will have the greatest chance of getting them right.  The third column is for questions you are unsure of 2 or 3 answers, most commonly those "choose all that apply" type questions. Column 4 is for the questions you have to clue for and I separate these out so that you can write down the topics that you need to go back and study. Doing this column system also helps you to have an idea of how you did walking out of the test.  I personally do the written questions first and then the graphic problems second.  Also if a question has too many parts, I'll save it for the end so it doesn't eat up time, because getting one of those parts wrong makes the whole question wrong and each questions only worth one point.

When you get nervous, take a few deep breaths and have confidence in the amount of time you've put into studying.  It's just an exam and even if you don't pass the first time around you've learned a lot and you should be proud of the efforts you've put in to yourself.  You're worth it!  Good luck!

Hi Emily, thank you for this amazing advice. I will definitely make sure to follow you r suggestion and do as you said. I am such a bad test taker that I am worried about that working against me because I am already walking into the test with that against me. I hope that I can relax and not worry about the result, just worry about taking it. I have read all the study material and feel ready, but with CLARB it feels like I just never know what could happen.

I truly appreciate the help.

Thank you.

Not sure if you took it already. But if you haven't, study framework planning, smart growth, complete streets, what a conceptual phase, development phase entails (study these phases thoroughly). There were two questions on storm water management facilities.

Clarissa,

One comment that I have seen a lot of on this board is "What IS framework planning". A lot of these newer CLARB topics are absent from the recommended readings, at least not using the verbage that CLARB is using. While it's definitely helpful to make posts such as yours, I think this board and our community would benefit from people being a little more descriptive about what these broad brush concepts are or what aspects they should be familiar with (without resorting to typing out the questions from the actual exams). Sort of that, my concern is that these threads and their associated comments simply regurgitate what examinees already know (ex. framework plans are listed in the LARE Orientation Guide, so you should already know that you need to study for them) and aren't very helpful.

This is less a comment about your specific post and more a request for everyone moving forward. Just trying to keep things organized and productive!

Admin -
I took section 3 this testing period and I second Clarissa on the topics she mentioned above. So far I haven't found good sources of those items (while I was studying or in a brief search after sitting for the exam). I agree with you that it would be nice to be more specific, but I'm not sure I could do that without trying to regurgitate parts of questions and answer choices which isn't allowed...my best attempt to share more specific topics within the rules is below. Please remove if I have gone too far...

Know what the typical elements of a framework plan are
Know what elements are included in each design phase and in what order they should occur: master planning, conceptual design, design development, etc.
Know typical elements of a complete street and what modes of transportation it should include and/or not include
Know what smart growth is, what it entails (density, walk-ability, mix of uses to create a walkable community, etc.)

Again, I haven't found good resources for all of these topics so I'm sorry I can't point anyone in the right direction. But, another point I would mention is this section, more than sections 1 & 2, seems to ask application questions. For example, "an LA does 'X', and the municipality asks them to incorporate 'insert topic here'. What elements would you include from the list below?" So it's not just knowing what each specification is from the LARE Orientation guide, but when and how to apply it. I hope that helps.
