Greetings fellow film fans:
Two new movies open at Laramie theaters this week: The science
fiction action sequel "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" (this
multimedia franchise includes 10 movies dating back to 1968)
heads the list, followed by the mystery sequel "Force of Nature:
The Dry 2". An old movie is also playing in Laramie, "Star Wars
Episode One: The Phantom Menace" (1999).
The best movies in town are "Challengers", "Civil War" and "The
Fall Guy".
One of the best films of 2023, "The Taste of Things" is finally
for sale on DVD this week. Access to this movie has been
difficult since it has not been included in basic streaming
services, unless you pay extra fees for its rental or purchase.
This French film about love and haute cuisine has generous
portions of love and artistic meal preparations, but don't try
to watch this on an empty stomach.

Greetings fellow film fans:
Three new movies open at Laramie theaters this week, a
biographical drama about late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse,
"Back to Black", the supernatural comedy, "If" and the horror
movie, "The Strangers: Chapter 1".
The best movies in town are "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes",
"Challengers", "Civil War" and "The Fall Guy".
Two excellent Japanese animated movies are also showing in
Laramie theaters, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (1984)
and "Castle in the Sky" (1986). Unfortunately, these are not
showing every day. They are switching back and forth, showing
off and on, from May 19 to 22 at both Laramie theaters. Check
the links below to see which movies (and which versions) are
showing each of those days.
Just to make it more complicated, the theaters are showing two
different versions of each of these Japanese movies. One version
has a Japanese soundtrack, with English subtitles, labeled as
"sub", or "subtitled", and the other version has an English
soundtrack. The English soundtrack version is labeled as "dub"
or "dubbed" even though both language versions are actually
dubbed.
Even though it is debated by some, the only real difference to
anyone who doesn't understand the Japanese language, (assuming
both the Japanese and English dubs are competently done) is that
the Japanese dub is the original one, but apparently there is
considerable demand for both versions, since this is a common
theatrical practice, but only for Japanese animated movies, not
most other kinds of foreign films. Disney Studios have done the
English dubbing on a lot of Japanese animated films, and Disney
definitely has that expertise.
It is interesting to watch these Japanese animated movies with
the English dub, combined with the English subtitles originally
made for the Japanese dub (sort of a best of both worlds
approach). Sometimes you see interesting minor differences in
the translations by watching it this way, and this gives the
viewer some insight into the translation process.

Greetings fellow film fans:
Five new movies open at Laramie theaters this week, including
two comedies, "Babes" and "Summer Camp," a Western, "The Dead
Don't Hurt," a road trip drama, "Ezra" and a horror movie, "In a
Violent Nature".
Of the five, the two movies getting the best reviews are "Babes"
and "In a Violent Nature", which is surprising because most
Hollywood comedies and horror films are made on the cheap, often
with inexperienced writers, directors and actors, but these two
are exceptions to the rule.
The best movies in town are "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga", "Kingdom
of the Planet of the Apes", and "The Fall Guy".
A notable video disk release this week is the Academy Award
winning drama, "Anatomy of a Fall."
