This premium modular helmet offers the freedom of an open face helmet as well as the comfort and security of a full face helmet. The SHARK Helmets EVO-ONE 2 Blank brings various improvement as enhanced chin locking system, new auto up and down visor and a general reviewed kinematic. And unlike many other "flip up" helmets the SHARK Helmets EVO-ONE 2 Blank is ECE 22.05 approved for riding with the chin-bar in both open and closed position.
This is the way it works to go from full- to open-face. Raise the visor all the way up. At the bottom front of the chin-piece is a red toggle, or catch, as the manual calls it. Hook your thumb behind the toggle, pull, and the whole chin-piece goes up in a 120-degree arc and fits neatly at the back of the helmet. Then you can use the visor in open-faced mode. To turn it back into a full-face, again, stop the bike, raise the visor, reach back and pull the chin-piece forward, and when it is at the bottom of the arc push the chin-piece rearward, towards your chin, until you hear a satisfying click. This is best done as a two-handed operation, one hand at the back of the helmet, the other pushing the chin-piece in. It takes a little practice to get that satisfying click that indicates it is locked in place.
The interior padding can be removed and washed for that brand-new smell. My L (large) Evoline weighed in at 3 pounds 10 ounces, 10 ounces more than my usual XL full-face (French heads must be bigger than Japanese heads), but that extra weight is in the construction of the movable parts. I did not find it overly noisy, as I have some flip-ups. Colors are black or silver, shiny or matte. Sizes run from XS to XL, and cost is $399.95.
As usual for the Evo series, the Shark EVO G T is made from an injected thermoplastic shell with multi-density EPS for impact protection. Also unchanged is the fact that the helmet comes in 2 outer shell sizes, with the first spanning XS to M and the second L to XL. Shell sizes are an important factor to consider when looking at a helmet since they affect how proportional the fit is as well as weight, safety, and comfort. Nonetheless, the Shark helmet is ECE 22.05 certified. For weight, the EVO GT is coming in at about 1680 grams, or 3 lbs 11 oz, in a size M, which is an improvement over the previous Evo One 2 and a little heavier than the Shark EvoES.
The EVO GT does also include an internal sun visor that is operated by a slider in the top of the helmet, which makes it an ambidextrous mechanism. To raise the chin bar, you get the same clever Auto Up / Auto Down system as the other Evo helmets and the completely redesigned mechanism seems to finally offer that higher clearance that would prevent the helmet from scratching the Pinlock insert.
The chin bar is opened with a single central button in the chin and the visor automatically lifts to allow the chin bar to clear the helmet. Once up, you get a much more aerodynamic profile than standard flip up helmets since the chin bar is effectively out of the way. Shark have also improved the mechanism to make it easier to flip closed as well.
Inside, the helmet is prepared for the Shark Sharktooth Prime Bluetooth Intercom System with speaker pockets and that the EPS grooves are numerous to allow for better internal ventilation. The helmet uses a micrometric buckle system, and the comfort liner is well finished as usual and does come with a decent number of cutouts for airflow.
The Shark EVO GT is coming with some substantial changes to it that are definitely appreciated and clearly reflected in its stellar performance and features. Not only will it justify its place as sitting above both the EVO ES and the older Evo One 2, but it is bringing some new features from Shark as well that make it much more user friendly.
