I think our work (https://sites.google.com/site/eng2lao/z2home) is still relevant and worth continuing with even when knowing the fact that Lao is now supported by Google Translate (GT). It's more so because translation quality is still low, as mentioned in the news announcement.
First let's take a break for a week or so to rest and celebrate the milestone i.e., 'Lao is now available in Google Translate', our stated project objective. I know we are not wholely and exclusively responsible for this milestone, however we do make some valuable contribution nevertheless.

As you can see the quality is rather low. This is why I think our work is still relevant and worth continuing with to help Google improve GT for Lao language, thus Lao community.
 
To do that practically I proposed our next move is to actually use Google Translator Toolkit (GTT) to do actual translation (Google people suggest this as well). I describe work steps in more detail in web page ...

After the excitement of the Google development on Lao translation, a sister of mine in Sydney has been in touch.  I have talked to her previously about our LaoENGT project.

She will send out our ‘call for volunteers’ to her friends and people she knows to get more people involved in the project which- I presume – is still going ahead.

Regardless of the quality, which I have not seen, I am so pleased that Lao language is recognized and accepted by Google. Let's hope that the quality improves with time as people use the facility and provide inputs.

Congrats to all! Luang in particular for keep pushing.
Here is the same blog translate from EN->Th->Lo why? remember I said how Google TM/MT works, how it uses statistical data from known context to make its selection. You can see the difference quality result; because there are more Thai text than Lao text, hence less reference for Lao ie. Lao translation is poorer. In thsi case not that much difference, but professional texts such as technical, political and scientific etc. that Lao lacks, we will see coming from TH->LO will give much better result.

Congrats to all! Luang in particular for keep pushing. Once we have a good decent EN-Lo other TM/MT will follow, the quality of translation will vary depending on how sophisticated the context analysis is, that will help determine more suitable translation texts.
