This is a five-minute video news item on the subject, so I'm not burdening the discussion forum overmuch by sharing it:
http://a-bas-le-ciel.blogspot.ca/2012/11/female-monks-vs-thailand.htmlAlthough I've read many books about contemporary Buddhism in Laos (and lived there for two-and-a-half years continuously, while learning the language, etc.) I have not yet seen this specific issue addressed.
The peculiar feminism of Lao Communism could actually make this more of an issue (or a more decisively resolved issue) than it would be (or now is) in Thailand.
As the five minute film suggests (without explaining), the situation (for the ordination of women) is fundamentally different in Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka is not currently exercising any cultural leadership over Southeast Asia (neither in Laos, nor in Cambodia, etc.).
If any members of the list have new or different information about this issue (within Laos) please let me know.
I've never seen this particular issue addressed by the panoply of NGOs active within Laos, nor, to my limited knowledge, has it ever been an interest of the Lao Women's Union. Inevitably, the question must be asked by someone, even if it just comes up as an imitation of an ongoing trend in Thailand (as with the instance of Buddhist monks getting involved in opposing deforestation, etc.).
