Swing Terminal in MacOS iTerm fails

I'm just getting started with Lanterna 3.1.1 on Java 8/MacOS 10.15.7/iTerm2 3.4. When trying to instantiate a SwingTerminal via the DefaultTerminalFactory, I get an exception:
Execution error (IllegalArgumentException) at java.awt.image.DirectColorModel/createCompatibleWritableRaster (DirectColorModel.java:1016).
Width (0) and height (0) cannot be <= 0
Width (0) and height (0) cannot be <= 0
Any ideas on where I'm going wrong? Any places to further investigate? I'm a Clojure developer and I'm not familiar with Swing or AWT. I was attracted to lanterna due to how it smooths over the details of those two with a pretty simply API.
