In the older versions of acrobat reader, each file opened in a separate window and you could manually size them so you could read two at once or with a widescreen, maybe even have a third program open and refer to the two PDFs without having to switch between programs.

Of course, you can have multiple windows. Just with any software using tabbed view, grab the tab and drag it away from the tab bar. In Acrobat/Reader, you will see a small page icon when the tab has been released from the initial window.

To change the default behavior of Acrobat to open PDFs in new windows rather than tabs, open Preferences via Edit -> Preferences or CTRL+K (on Windows). Choose the General category, and deselect the option Open documents as new tabs in the same window (requires restart), the ninth option from the top in the current version.

Hello! I am researching affordable, aka free pdf software for my coworkers that could really use a program that allows them to import and extract pages in a document.
Can anyone confirm that the free downloadable Sumatra PDF program would actually include this feature?

Whilst there are ways to script the current page location to a backend editor application, a feature used with LaTeX editors that can add or remove PDF contents on the fly, that is unlikely to suite your intended usage.
SumatraPDF can be used in a commercial setting as a frontend to any enhanced virtual printer, which in turn can add or remove pages as required.

Splitting pages only to image based files can be done most easily by using command line instructions to the Microsoft PDF printer, as discussed in other topics.
in short -print-to "Microsoft Print to PDF" -print-settings %p "%1"
but you will still need to provide a named output file or filename port, for automation you will find a programmable Print Driver as included in some of the above mentioned products is better.

Alternatively if non comercial users wish to extract just the current page we can combine with cpdf (other products are available) using SumatraPDF settings by adding to ExternalViewers
CommandLine = "path to\cpdf.exe" "%1" %p "%1-page-%p"

PDFSAM a simple portable GUI driven java app (from the same stable as the more extensive sejda* version) is one that has a Free Open Source basic version that can easily be called from SumatraPDF. There are limitations to this simplicity, since without adding a more complex page handling mechanism, we are initially constrained to only passing one filename. Expanding to include multiple files in preset workspaces is possible but goes well beyond the scope of this post.

For Merging you will need to dismiss that screen and use the Merge option in the dashboard to find and select the current file along with other(s).
We could work around the limitation by adding a dummy pdf (e.g. cover.pdf)
then delete or use the entry (note the dummy file must exist)
so adding to the above,

For such needs, Sumatra is not the best choice. It is a pdf reader and as I know it can not be used for splitting or editing the pdf files. I personally never used it for such needs. There are a lot of online pdf editors where you can merge or split the pdf pages. For example, I use [url=commercial site removed] you need just to import the pdf file and you can edit it as you want.

Window > New Window will give you 2 windows for the same PDF. Each window can display a different page in the PDF. Changes made in either window will be to the same, original, PDF. Merely position the windows so you can see them both.

I don't think it's possible to make "Split" split vertically, or any other way to view non-consecutive pages at the same time, short of duplicating the PDF on the hard drive and opening the original and the copy at the same time.

Note that none of this will translate to any other user viewing the PDF. It's not possible to set a "display" where 2 non-consecutive pages are shown to a reader at the same time. If the desire is to show users these 2 non-consecutive pages, then the original layout should be addressed. You can't do it in the PDF itself.

In the new Acrobat Pro version, it is still there, though almost impossible to find. Hope this helps. Even with this thread, which got me close, it was still a lot of searching around, so here's the step-by step.

This worked perfectly. Only one thing, if you open the pdf on ilustrator again all the pages will still appear, to avoid that make sure you unchecked the "preserve illustrator editing capabilities" before saving your illustrator file into pdf.

I am using Acrobat 8.0 I don't have a "pages" either. But you should see "Extract Pages" under the Document drop-down list. It work perfect for me and saved a lot of time. Glad that Adobe had the foresight to build in this function.

This is what I despise about Adobe. They change the user interface for the sake of change. An inconsistent interface renders tutorials like this video useless. It flushes down the toilet the time and effort a user invests in learning an earlier interface.

You need any of the Adobe Acrobat products; not Adobe reader. Adobe Reader is the free lighter version of Acrobat from Adobe without all the bells and whistles of Acrobat. I used Acrobat at work to break my pages since I too have only Adobe Reader at home. Yeah it sucks I know. You might try the library, work, etc.for a computer with Acrobat. You can pick it up pretty cheap on ebay or craigslist.

I was able to accomplish this using a free online service called www.splitpdf.net. You simply upload the file and tell it which page you want extracted. It then returns a pdf containing only the page you selected. Unfortunately, you have to repeat this step for each page you need to extract but it's an easy process.

I want to be able to draw in my drawing app (Procreate), but also have the iPad split view open with one of my "how to draw" pdf books on the side. I can open the "Photos" app and view images I have synced to it, but I want to be able to view full pdf books.

If you have dedicated PDF reader apps, try them. You can also try importing (opening) the PDF file in iBooks and trying that. I know that iNooks works in Split View, but I have not tested it with PDFs.

I have a drawing in autocad that I'd like to print in full scale, split up into multiple letter size papers. Whether I can do this in autocad or from a pdf in adobe reader doesn't really matter, I'd just like to be able to do it. In adobe reader there's a poster option that automatically splits everything up perfectly, but I can't seem to export a pdf in the proper scale. When I go to plot options on layout I've tried both 1:1 and 1'-0"+1'-0" as my scale and it doesn't make a difference. Is there a setting that I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using the 2018 version if that makes a difference.

as you can see from attached my [old] screencast that you can achieve it by AutoCAD by VPSYNC (Express Tool) command . The idea is just prepare one viewport layout with your scale ( 1:1) then take copies from that scaled VP as seen in below link and depending on your drawing size and letter size paper . Now you have the same VP copied multi time . type VPSYNC command and select your original VP then the others to follow the master one . >> Click

You have to plot your pdf to full scale, for example using AutoCAD PDF High quality print pc3 and ISO A0 paper size, so that later you can use the poster option in 1:1 pattern to print it on multiple A4 or A3 pages out of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Note: this method takes longer than the others, especially if you have a PDF with a large amount of pages, or you want to split a PDF many times. But unlike free, online PDF splitters, this method does not upload and store your PDF on a cloud, which is important if the PDF pages have confidential or private information.

Our all-in-one PDF splitter, merger, editor, reader, and creator for Windows. Keep your private document off the cloud, and stay in control of your documents like never before. Instantly split and rename PDF pages with ease.

I'm using publisher to create a newsletter which needs links to sections of a website. I'm not trying to create hyperlinks. Some of these links are long and need to be broken to go over more than one line. The links can be copied and pasted from Publisher with no issue, but once exported to PDF then copied and pasted, a space is added at the end of each line which creates a 404 error when copied to a browser. There are no hidden special characters and it does it if I use a soft return or not.
I just need text that the reader can copy and paste to go to the required page regardless of how long the url is. I've attaches a sample

Thanks GarryP,

The error was picked up by my proofreader so they were getting the error too. I appreciate your suggestion on using a shortened url and have added shortened versions to the document to get it resolved for now. As this is going to be an ongoing issue I'm still hoping to work out why it is doing it. I've created a mock file with examples. It occurs when I copy and past the url from the pdf into a browser. It puts a space before adelaide.

For me this is Browser specific, Safari includes the space when the link is copied from the pdf and pasted into the browser resulting in the 404 error but both Firefox and Chrome seem to automatically remove the space and take you to the correct page but clicking the link in the pdf where it appears over two lines also only reads the first line and subsequently errors in all browsers...
