Looking to upgrade my gaming computer, mainly only because I like to upgrade every 2 years, and my current one is now 2 and a half years old, but also because I think my graphics card may be having some (apparently known for the card) issues that annoy me. That being that after a few hours of playing, I get bad stutters, and a restart solves it.
Proposed Upgrades:
Motherboard: Gigabyte B650M Gaming WiFi AM5 mATX $189 (AlthoughI literaly just read that this is not a great board??)
Case: MSI MAG FORCE 112R Mid Tower $89 (old case does need replacing as I damaged the USB ports on the front interface)
Storage: Hoping to simply transplant the old storage into this new one.
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D $588 (I have a Thermaltake Toughair 510 that I use on the current CPU, which I plan to use on the new one)
PSU: Planning to reuse the existing PSU.
GPU: ASUS Tuf Gaming Radeon RX7800XT OC Edition 16GB GDDR6 $899 (would love the 7900XT but it's more than I'm comfortable paying.)
Ram: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6000Mhz CL30 $209 (should I go CL20?? Everything I read says CL30 is gold standard?)
Monitor: Reuse the existing 2 monitors.
This should cost me around the $2000 mark, which is what the original system cost including Windows and the PSU and 75Hz monitor, and storage. So it's more than the original build considering I'm not replacing everything. Some of the prices listed are Boxing Day specials, but I don't think they're all that heavily discounted, so I'd expect to find then around the same price somewhere when I do buy.
My pricing is from centrecom. That's where I got the parts for the original system from. They seem to be the cheapest I've found. Should I be looking somewhere else for better pricing?
Any thoughts or comments on anything i should consider?
PC is used for some video editing for a family Youtube channel, but not all that often. 95% of the time it is used to play DayZ. Otherwise it's basic bookkeeping for my small business, and web browsing including Youtube watching. Gotta watch those cat videos!
The GPU has a minimum power supply size of 750W, so expect possible issues if overclocking. It should be fine, but it is known power supply power quality will drop over time as the unit ages. I also mention it as if you want a faster GPU (of the current generation), it would most likely need a new and larger PSU.
Good point on the psu. I can get any number of 850w power supplies for under $200 after a quick search, so that might be a prudent investment. But yes I do have all the original modular cables.
The video editing and associated files are mostly on an external ssd, so that's not a huge issue.
I'll check out those websites for pricing. Thanks.
Ok, big help. Thanks guys. I went into my local Centrecom store too, and played dumb. They also seemed to agree with you about not upgrading to am5 yet. They suggested that my 5700xt was being bottlenecked by my Ryzen 5 3600, and to just upgrade the cpu, amd maybe double my ram from 16gb to 32gb. They suggested the 5600x would be the perfect chip to couple with my 5700xt, but Im still fairly sure I want to uograde the gpu in the near future anyway, so I opted for the 5800x3d, so that I can upgrade to the 7600xt gpu in a few months. Apparently doubling my ram, and the 5800x3d should give me a huge performance boost over what I have now, and I may not even need to change the gpu, but we'll see. Have ordered the 5800x3d, and the ram, so when it arrives next week, we'll ssoon find out.
That being that after a few hours of playing, I get bad stutters, and a restart solves it.
Restart the game or restart Windows?
Dumping money without knowing the cause of the issue isn't ideal.
The amount of power should be fine but the age can be a issue. How far out of warranty is it? some have 5y warranty others 10y.
I don't like risking $1000+ system upgrades on a PSU that is a few years past it's warranty.
The extra RAM should help with memory leak stutters unless it is VRAM you are running out of and the CPU upgrade will boost minimum FPS especially if your not running max detail settings and 1080P.
If you want to crank up detail settings or increase the res then this is where a GPU upgrade will provide the biggest gains.
Ok, so.psu is 2.5 years old. I have no concerns with it, so for now, it's not a factor. I can replace it easily enough if need be.
I have purchased and installed a 5800x3d so far very happy with it.
I have decided to get a 5700xt OC edition, but cannot decide between these 2 options.
Gigabyte 7800xt oc vs Asus tuf gaming 7800xt oc.
I think the Gigabyte has a slightly higher clock speed? Like 45MHz? But I can't really find much in the way of comparisons for these. There's like $10 difference in price, so thats not a factor.
Some say Gigabyte have bad reliability. My current 5700xt seems ok, bar 1 or 2 small glitches I had in the last 18 months that I'm not even sure was the gpu.
My motherboard is an Asus board.
Anyone have any opinions on these 2 cards and which one I should get?
I also found a Powercolor HellHound edition for about $80 cheaper, but again, I'm not familiar with the brand and the clock speed was a little less than the Gigabyte from what I can tell.
They all have alightly different physical sizes too.
I would ignore the 45MHz clock speed difference, as it is insignificant. With aftermarket cards you should focus on which one has the best cooler, and that you like the look of (within your price range). Also, make sure the card you choose fits your case :)
Ok. I have a Mag Forge 112R case, so pretty sure almost anything should fit in there.
I read something about the Asus fans having double ball bearings or something, and the Gigabyte cards have something else. Can't remember what it was but it was described as cheaper and not as good.
Edit: I think I actually found the answer. I know the consensus here leans towards Asus, I already have the software for my current Gigabyte 5700xt card, so looking at this comparison on versus.com:
-tuf-gaming-radeon-rx-7800-xt-oc-edition-vs-gigabyte-radeon-rx-7800-xt-gaming-oc
Looks like the gigabyte will be my choice.
I had a similar setup until recently (R3600/Gigabyte 5700XT). Worked fine for 4 years never had any trouble whatsoever, perfect for 1080p gaming! Time for an upgrade.. I knew AM5 was just around the corner but decided to refresh the AM4 setup instead. Upgraded R3600 to 58003XD and put all my cash into a RX7900XT. This system plays 1440P at high settings beautifully. I sweated over replacing my 750W Corsair gold PSU, but fortunately it is modular with 2 x 8 pin cables which the RX7900XT needs and works fine ok so far. That card OC'd pulls like 280W though so I am probably pushing it.
So my vote goes for a R58003XD refresh combined with a RX7800 XT/7900XT(x) can tell you it works well for 1440p. 4K gaming is another story though...
Ok that was weird. Original ram ran at 3600. New ram ran at 3600 in slots old ram was in. Then i put the old ram in the previously unused slots and all 4 sticks now run at 3600.
Maybe you just didn't seat them properly, and now that you've uninstalled and reinstalled everything they're seated correctly?
