Hi Yogis!
Here I am working on active splits at my circus class (as shown). You cannot do these splits the way most yoga teachers try to teach splits.
This week I have added to my posts of last week about spine, hips and hamstrings. This is an interesting topic to many people. As I look around the community, I have seen how most people are not able to straighten their legs and straighten their spine at the same time. And that most people will sacrifice their spine in the quest to straighten their legs in forward bending postures (I am talking about the general stretching population not just yogis). I wanted to write this post to help you rethink that equation.
I also go over the importance of core activation and active movement in general for better movement.
My spine is straight here, as you can see. For this variation it is important. My knee is close to my chest--there is no air space. Although I was making an effort to straighten my legs in this position, this was about as far as they would go. I could have hunched my spine to straighten them but I chose spinal integrity over straight legs, although I understand most onlookers would see this as more straight than possible for them.
More food for thought. Look forward to sharing with you when next we meet!
