An underground pedestrian crossing for Kollupitiya

Galle road usually attracts heavy vehicle traffic during day time. The
present pedestrian crossing in Kollupitiya in front of National Savings
Bank head office is busy most of the day time. At any given moment one
can see people crossing Galle road from this place. One reason for
heavy pedestrian movement is the nearby bus park at the by lane which
moves towards Kollupitiya railway station. Lot of buses park here with
passengers and people get down and cross the road using this crossing.
Due to this often the traffic along the Galle road is interrupted.

During school hours girls from the nearby Methodist College too use
this pedestrian crossing to cross the road and reach the bus stop in
front of National Savings Bank. Buses that arrive from Bambalapitiya
side park at the nearby bus halt in the sea side and people getting
down from here use the present pedestrian crossing to reach land side
mainly Liberty Plaza and Liberty Hall.

Therefore it will be convenient for the pedestrians if an underground
pedestrian crossing is built in front of National Savings Bank linking
the sea side with the land side for the benefit of both pedestrians and
motorists.
