I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the
true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident:
that all men are equal."
I have a dream that one day on the lands of north the sons of former
soldiers and the sons of former militants will be able to sit down
together at a table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day our land, sweltering with the heat of
political injustice will be transformed into an oasis of justice.
I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where
they will not be judged by affiliations but by the content of their
character and hard work.
I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day our country will be
transformed into a situation where little Sinhalese boys, Sinhalese
girls, Tamil boys, Tamil girls, Muslim boys, Muslim girls will join
hands and work together for the country as sisters and brothers.
"Land where our fore fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from
every side, let brotherhood ring."
And if Sri Lanka is to be a great nation, this must become true.
So let brotherhood ring from everywhere. Let brotherhood ring from the
mighty mountains of hill country. Let brotherhood ring from lands of
north. Let brotherhood ring from the south. Let brotherhood ring from
west and east. When we let brotherhood ring, when we let it ring from
every village and every hamlet, from every province and every city, we
will be able to speed up that day when all Sri Lankans, Sinhalese,
Tamils, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Catholics, Christians, will be able
to join hands and sing, "Brotherhood at last! Brotherhood at last! , we
won at last!"
