Hi,

I'm leading a session of languageforge at ELTW in Germany next week, the participants will primarily be other Language Technology Consultants. I will demonstrate the existing features on the site, do some practical exercises. Is there any information that you would like me to communicate about Languageforge?

Things like:

- what near term features should we be expecting (export lexicon from Languageforge?)
- long term plans for Languageforge (send/receive with FLEx? Export to Webonary?)

I've looked over the SIL Language Software Development Planning Site and I see several proposals, but no current information regarding their status.

Anyway, I'm open to communicating what you want me to communicate, but I think our participants will want to know the current status and what development they can expect in the near future, so they can think about when and whom to recommend it for in their service groups.

Thanks,

Stevan

Hi Stevan,

The team is currently working on Send / Receive with FLEx.  That's coupled with an aim of having 100% FLEx model compatibility (i.e. do no harm in either direction).  Note that this is not quite the same as same as saying LanguageForge has all the features of FLEx, it certainly does not.

I'll leave it to Chris to comment further.

Regards,
Cambell

Dear Stevan and others,

Thank you for writing.  Our team is hard at work on implementing S/R between FLEx and Language Forge.  We expect to ship this feature in the next month or so and to engage "early adopters" in testing this functionality.  If you are reading this email and would like your language project to engage the developers in helping test S/R, please email me off-list.

Next up we expect Language Forge to have a phone/tablet friendly UI with limited offline features, as well as specific wide-engagement features that are outlined in the project proposals you have mentioned.  In the long-term, Language Forge will continue to be strongly influenced by the features and functions that users are requesting.  Language Forge feature development happens in defined cycles, and some features are incredibly complex to implement (e.g. S/R).

Going forward, I expect to see regular updates to existing features and new features added that will bring the product out of its "beta preview" status and into a more mature product suitable for general use.

I'd like to thank everyone who has engaged our development team helping report bugs and drive feature development, and I look forward to working with more of you to make Language Forge a useful tool in your language project.

Sincerely,

Chris Hirt
for the Language Forge development team
