Hi Stephanie,

I'll make sure Kathryn adds you to the new 'Laneway' google group if you are not already part of it.

See the attached PDF with laneway info, as well as a questionnaire. You and David are welcome to fill in the questionnaire, as owners of an abutting laneway property, and send it to me via scan or fax.

Cheers,

Subject: Proposal to reopen laneway North block Vaughan and Ivy Streets, meeting with Alain Miguel

Hello all,

First of all I would like to thank Dave Mennier for his professional efforts in coordinating with the City of Ottawa.  And thank you also to Berndt Zeitler for informing us of the situation. I would also like to thank all those involved in finding answers to the many concerns this proposal has raised.

I am not sure if I have access to the Vaughan street google group community but I include the e-mail address anyway.  We are the owners (with husband David Coupland) of 83 Vaughan Street, currently residing in Doha, Qatar.  A big hello to you all.  We certainly miss you guys.

I hope you donï؟½t mind if I speak bluntly, and I hope I donï؟½t offend those who may support the reopening of the laneway.  David Coupland and I have had experience living in the New Edinburgh area on a backyard laneway and the following are my expectations (and fond memories).

A laneway running through the back of our houses will:

ï؟½         attract young delinquents as it is a small, quiet, public area to hang out and do things they perhaps shouldnï؟½t be doing (I will leave this up to your imagination)

ï؟½         provide an additional access point to our houses for burglars (we had to put bars on our windows)

ï؟½         lower our property value

ï؟½         possibly increase our taxes if it has to be maintained by the City (and they decide to unload the costs on us)

ï؟½         reduce the resale value of the house (as it is now more public)

If the lane is reopened, we will have:

ï؟½         less privacy (both front and back yards are publicly viewed)

ï؟½         less greenery (and, of course, a smaller garden)

ï؟½         less sleep (dog walkers are usually up early in the mornings and the young crowd hang out late at night)

ï؟½         to conduct more frequent repairs and maintenance of the public back fence (and even occasionally deal with vandalism)

ï؟½         to shovel more (if the City does not maintain it)

ï؟½         to continue to park our cars on the street side (as the lane is too small for additional parking)

ï؟½         to invest in a more robust security system (expect approximately one burglary per year from the back yard)

ï؟½         the pleasure of becoming more acquainted with the City police

Has the City of Ottawa given a rationale or reasons why we should reopen the laneway?  Does it have any practical or aesthetic value?  I donï؟½t see why we need to sacrifice garden space for an additional street, well itï؟½s not even a street, a laneway.

Could home owners possibly buy the chunk of laneway land (currently owned by the City) on which their gardens currently sit?

Thanksï؟½Steph
