Beforeyou try this fix, make sure that you have installed the ATK package in your ASUS notebook. The ATK package, containing drivers that control your hotkeys, backlight and some other optional functionality, is usually pre-installed in every new ASUS laptop. And the HControl.exe program we need to start is also within this ATK package. In most cases you can navigate to HControl.exe through the following path:

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

I have a problem with the new version of Ubuntu. I used to have Ubuntu 18.04 LTS version, but I decided to change to the normal version and update it to Ubuntu 18.10. Since then I can't turn the keyboard backlight on.

I have already tried to open a terminal and type: xset led 1 ... xset led 32, but it doesn't work. I have also tried to turn it on by pressing Fn+F4 and that shows the picture of the keyboard backlight but without the blue progressbar.

This used to be my sister's laptop, I replaced the broken drive today and was trying to get it setup. She doesn't know, but the Best Buy listing says it has a backlit keyboard, and the keys are marked with a backlight up/down icon, the same as my Q504UAK (the same as the Q304UAK, but with a numpad and bigger screen). I believe I remember the backlight working, but I'm not sure. I read the manual and there is no mention which I thought was strange but it wouldn't make sense to have the keys with no function...

They would use a keyboard that they already have in other laptops and not provide the functions to certain keys rather than producing a new keyboard especially for it. The manual seems to indicate that this is the case.

Given what you have tried about the only thing left if it does have backlights is that it is a hardware fault associated with the lights themselves rather than the keys as I think from memory that there are no other indications or screen notifications etc when operating the backlight keys, only that the lights change

I was working on the hardware when I installed a new SSD to replace the faulty hard drive, and this is my first physical home repair. It is possible I messed something up there. As for running hcontrol.exe I've tried that and had no luck. It also doesn't show up in the Windows Mobility Management window either.

I tried using the onscreen keyboard to press fn+f4 to brighten the backlight, but that didn't work. Normally when I used to turn the backlight on it'd show a popup that says brightness up under the backlight icon, but not even that shows up, with both the onscreen and physical keyboards.

@Gabriel Mascarenas The Brightness slider appears in action center in Windows 10, version 1903. To find the brightness slider in earlier versions of Windows 10, select Settings Gear-shaped Settings icon > System > Display, and then move the Change brightness slider to adjust the brightness.

If you don't have a desktop PC and the slider doesn't appear or work, try updating the display driver. In the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager, and then select Device Manager from the list of results. In Device Manager, select Display adapters, then select the display adapter. Press and hold (or right-click) the display adapter name, then select Update driver.

If your ASUS keyboard backlight stops working suddenly, you will be curious. Why does this issue happen? How to make the ASUS keyboard backlight back to its normal state? In this MiniTool post, we will introduce some details about the reasons for this issue and some methods to get rid of this issue.

ASUS is a famous manufacturer in the field of computing. It produces different kinds of products like high-end motherboards, keyboards, graphics cards, computers, and more. Recently, we have note one ASUS-related issue: ASUS keyboard backlight not working.

Many users have encountered this issue when using an ASUS laptop. Perhaps, you are also bothered by this problem. To help you solve this issue, we will introduce some related information including the causes of this issue and the methods to fix it.

There should be installation file that can be used to manage your hotkeys. But, it may not be executed in your ASUS computer for installation. This is also a top reason for ASUS keyboard backlight not working.

This needs you to completely shut down your ASUS computer and draining the static charge. By doing this, your computer can reset the temporary configurations and force itself to reinitialize the configurations.

Hcontrol.exe comes from ASUS and it is used to manage all the hotkeys on the ASUS laptop. It can also be used to manage the ASUS keyboard backlight. This file is included in your ASUS laptop. If it is not functioning automatically, you can manually use it to fix ASUS keyboard backlight not working.

2. Select the operating system you are using and then you will enter a page where you can find all drivers you can download. You need to find these drivers: ATK, Hotfix, Smart Gesture, and Touchpad/Keyboard.

3. Download them on your computer. Next, you need to access the specified download path. Then, you need to right-click on each driver from ATK, Hotfix, Smart Gesture, and Touchpad/Keyboard one by one and select Run as administrator.

The laptop is ASUS FX503vd, I tried several versions of Linux kernels (currently running one is the 4.17.1), but still have not managed to make the keyboard backlight control keys work. After the system boot on, the backlight is always on. There are two function keys (reused the numerical keypad) which is to control the brightness of the backlight. In windows, I can adjust down its brightness until fully off. But pressing the same keys in Linux has no effect at all. My feeling is the kernel did not detected the corresponding WMI device

Does anyone know how to setup the keyboard backlight control, fan control and screen brightness keyboard shortcut on the Asus ROG GL553VW for Ubuntu 20.04LTS? I have searched everywhere and I could not find a working solution for this issue.

Edit: Issue solved by rebuilding the lastest stable Linux Kernel and changing the file drivers/hid/hid-ids.h in the Linux kernel with the following changes (accoding to apeelme at _bug.cgi?id=194557):

The only things I have installed are: AMD Ryzen Master( no overclock or other fiddling around), Adrenalin 23.2.2 (WHQL Recommended), Hogwarts Legacy, Qbittorrent, VLC, Libre Office and Foxit Reader. So nothing that I hadn't installed on my previous build. On my other PC I had a collection of game trainers and other dangerous staff and I didn't need to reinstall Windows for 3 Years ( with moded Windows , services disabled and other win app disabled and deleted ).

Thank you for your answer, I will try this fix and test it to see if the issue get's fixed, first I will try the Hardware Acceleration disabled from the browser, because in my case I don't have issues in games.

Having the same issue with a 6700xt and 23.2.2 drivers. In fact it just happened while trying to type this reply. This system was stable and would run for days without a crash when I had my old video card in it. Now it hard locks a couple times a day. I really think its a driver issue since I think they rewrote the latest drivers and are still working out the bugs. I'll add more details in an edit but want to post this b4 it crashes again.
