A former film critic, the 47-year-old Mendonça has been devotedly recording the workings of his hometown Recife for nearly two decades of filmmaking. The product of an artistic journey that has produced a handful of experimental shorts and a feature-length documentary, his debut fiction feature Neighboring Sounds (2012) was an ingeniously crafted and deliciously manic meditation on surveillance and paranoia, set in a wealthy apartment block of Recife that served as a microcosm of the country through the anxieties that permeated it. With Aquarius, the filmmaker reaffirms his desire to address the contemporary tensions of Brazil, but does not ascribe explicit political ambitions to his film. Rather, he seems to be one of those artists primarily drawn to story and character, whose uncompromising humanism makes their work inherently political today.

Aquarius Films is an award-winning production company based in Australia, which has developed a reputation for delivering high quality, prestige films and television series. The company is current in production on SBS miniseries The Unusual Suspects, starring Miranda Otto and Aina Dumlao, and Parent Up, which it is producing for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Clara oozes dignity and panache. She is also arrogant and haughty, a character of wonderful complexity. The film is infused with nostalgia, but not conservative. The past is alive in Clara and the objects that surround her, but she is not withdrawn. She cherishes her old vinyl records but has no qualms about downloading mp3s. And she boldly clings on to the world around her, even as she rages against a form of materialism that has perverted the meaning of words and objects.

In 2001 the first Inuit-made feature film, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner won the Golden Camera at Cannes. Admirers of it, among whom we count ourselves, have wondered whether there would ever be a follow-up. Since Antanarjuat, director Zacharias Kunuk has had an active career in documentaries. Now, however, he has returned with a second fiction feature, Maliglutit (Searchers).

I found the film appealing partly because it presents that rare thing, a plausible depiction of the life of an academic. The heroine, Nathalie, played in another star turn by Isabelle Huppert, teaches philosophy in a Parisian high school. Her students are obviously sophisticated kids, and she finds fulfillment in her work. Her husband is an intellectual, and they have two children. Her life seems ideal and her future certain. In the course of the film, however, she suffers a series of setbacks.

Again Filho sets his story in his native city of Recife and again the story revolves around predatory real-estate developers building high-rise residences by buying up and bulldozing beautiful old neighborhoods. The earlier film wove together stories of several families living in such a neighborhood, threatened both by criminals and by the encroachment of modern, soulless towers. Aquarius focuses instead on one wealthy dweller in an otherwise empty apartment building, Aquarius.

The party is planned to culminate in a substantial dinner. We see the women of the family cooking, setting the long table, inexplicably taking away the unused dishes and utensils, and assembling plates of food wrapped in plastic (above), to be distributed to the neighbors. Few films have made food look so unappetizing. Mainly, though, these people bicker. The party portion of this 173-minute film occupies about 150 minutes, shot in nearly continuous time.

More recent American examples of parallel-protagonist film are Julie & Julia, discussed here, and Public Enemies and Inglourious Basterds, considered here. The first entry also considers an older example, Enchantment (1948).

The film traverses various happenings that have taken place in the apartment through the years. What these happenings make clear is that Clara is her own woman. She remains, notwithstanding her age, elegant and sexy. She has presence. She has many flaws but because of her forthrightness, determination and sheer humanity, she captivates. She is an empathetic figure even if her children at times find her impossibly stubborn.

The Brazilian director's film was snubbed by his country as a contender for Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination supposedly after the cast protested about the impeachment of the Brazilian President Dilma Roussef on the red carpet at last year's Cannes Film Festival - but now it has been released in Brazil, it is no longer overshadowed by politics

The counter-reaction saw #BoycottAquarius became a trending topic on Twitter. The leading voice criticising the Cannes red carpet demonstrations was that of film critic Marcos Petrucelli. He argued that the Aquarius filmmakers were in the pocket of the Rousseff government.

To maximize the efficiency of the coating application process, high-solids loadings are desirable. By reducing the coating time using high-solids formulations, productivity is increased and overall manufacturing costs are reduced. Aquarius Preferred film coating systems are state-of-the-art immediate-release coatings, which have been scientifically formulated with careful polymer selection. High-solids cellulosic or high-solids PVP/VA formulations improve film adhesion to all substrates, especially those that offer challenges in aqueous film coating. When compared to competitive offerings, Aquarius film coating systems have proven to offer smoother, more consistent coverage even at the highest solids levels.

Clear advantages in film coating process productivity are seen with high-solids suspensions. These formulations allow the solids content of the coating system to be increased significantly (typically up to 20 percent w/w solids for pigmented coatings, and in certain cases up to 25 percent) with viscosities in the range of 100 to 300 cP.

This film vibrates with a tangible sense of place, both the apartment building and the beach beyond. I was reminded of visits to similar tropical locations in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The movie also provides a window to the complexity and joy of the people in the Latin American world, their focus on devouring life and surrounding themselves with big families.

While holidaying in Berlin, Australian photojournalist, Clare meets Andi, a charismatic local man and there is an instant attraction between them. A night of passion ensues. But what initially appears to be the start of a romance suddenly takes an unexpected and sinister turn when Clare wakes the following morning to discover Andi has left for work and locked her in his apartment. An easy mistake to make, of course, except Andi has no intention of letting her go again. Ever.

The film tells the story of Clara, a 65-year-old widow, cancer survivor, and last resident of the Aquarius, a building she has lived in for nearly all of her adult life. The neighboring apartments of the aging complex have all been abandoned, only to be acquired by a construction company resolute in forcing Clara out so they can destroy it and build something new. Unfortunately for them, Clara is set on staying.

Due to the strong parallels between Clara's plight and the plight of the people of Brazil, the film has now taken on a new meaning. Her fight with the construction company and the shady tactics they employ to take advantage of her can be seen through the lens of an entire citizenship's struggle with a corrupt government. The people of Brazil had found their champion in an unlikely hero, as Aquarius garnered international acclaim and provided them with a protagonist whose story was their own.

"It was picked up by international media," Filho continued. "Of course, the film itself has a strong point of view in terms of how society works, so we got a lot of support from millions of people and we got a lot of attacks. We were on the front line."

As you may have noticed above, we have taken the time to show you the scale of the pattern of this film. The image with the man (or woman, we're not sexist) shows how the Aquarius print looks in a 59" (approximately 5 feet) by 72" (6 feet) sheet. The image is to scale so it should be helpful in determining how the print will look on your car, truck, motorcycle, or anything else you decide to wrap. Please note, however, that the entire pattern is not visible here (in other words, the repeating Aquarius pattern is much larger than 5 by 6 feet so you won't necessarily get what is shown).
