Something I've been aware of for a while now is that when John Roach the
original moderator of this discussion group disappeared, this group lost
the ability for new members to join in. I'm not aware that John ever
gave anyone else backup manager/moderator status either.

What this means is that any new people wanting to join in our
discussions can't. I've had a couple of people contact me by email.

It also means that if any of us ever change our email addresses we could
lose our access to this group as well.

In a nutshell this group, if left the way it is will eventually die off.

I've looked into contacting google to see if they can assign manager
access to anyone else, I've also looked through the google group support
forums. The reality is Google don't offer any technical support to the
forums. If a group such as ours loses it's moderator then the only way
forward is to create a new group and everyone has to move across. And
there are a lot of other groups in the same predicament as us and no
help from Google.

So at this stage I'd like to hear what people think.

Do we setup a new Google Group?

Do we setup a Yahoo Group instead?

Do we setup a bulletin board style group somewhere?

Do we do nothing?

Cheers,
Eriks

I believe that this discussion group needs to remain in place, though new members do need to be able to join. Thus if a new group is required, then that is the way we need to go. I believe that interest in 1800's is growing and this needs to be supported.

Cheers

It would be preferable for this Landcrab group to continue, but as I
understand it, that would require the agreement of John Roach (as the
owner of the group) to transfer ownership.

If John cannot be contacted, or his cooperation to transfer ownership
is not likely, it would be reasonable to set-up a new group with a
more robust management structure. Perhaps LOCA Pres, Sec, and
Treasurer should all be owners (or a group of members), to remove this
"single point of failure." Trust is a key element in having more than
one owner or manager.

But first, every effort must be made to contact John Roach.

I am happy to support a new group / forum, even if it requires a donation.

Hi All

When the old board became too expensive and we moved to this one we
lost a bunch of old/interesting/important posts, but we had no choice.
Are we not at that stage again? I like the idea of MULTIPLE moderators
so that we will not have the current problem again.

My 2c: Bite the bullet. If there is a group that are happy to
moderate, then lets get it going. I'll put my hand up to be one of
them.

Hi All,

We do need to keep the board going, whether this is as a Google group
or another identity it is a valuable resource that we cannot afford to
loose.

As you may know I've recently scored an early Aussie Mini and the
number of forums out there for Mini's is amazing. Sure there were a
lazy 5 million Mini's built and I think the Landcrab is about 300K. I
reckon that 1800 owners are alot more accomadating than our Mini
counterparts.

Our problem probably lies in the relative uniqueness of our cars,
because they are underated even if 10-20% still survive then that
makes around 60k left. You can count the number of 1800 clubs on one
hand and if it were not for the likes of Daryl and Patrick we would
have nothing at all.

A few years I put my hand up and nominated as president of LOCA, I'm
proud to be the president, I wonder everyday why so many people I talk
to "used to own" an 1800.

I'm not trying to flog the LOCA line but if we all get behind the club
then maybe the funding would be available to host a forum of our own.
I have no idea of how much it would cost, but I'm sure if we had the
numbers then we could help to preserve our fantastic cars and provide
a valuable service to those who are new to the 1800 and are wondering
what they have gotten themselves into.

John has done a wonderful job of getting the 1800 onto the web. It's
up to us to carry forward and find an outlet for our cars.

Anyhow I've gibbered on for a good while now.

I'm sure that I'd be right in saying that this group has the backing
of LOCA and we will make every effort to to preserve it.

Ian

I am prepared to back a new group or forum. A forum would be great!
