Does anyone know of any easy to follow instructions for installing
CLISP on Mac OS X? I'm not finding the instructions on the CLISP site
very helpful.

I installed through MacPorts. It is quite straightforward.

Just install macports:
http://www.macports.org/install.php
And after that on a terminal you type:
sudo port install clisp

The New Artisans site is really informative for Mac OS X, particularly
the Ready Lisp dmg. But it seems to promote SBCL & I thought this
book required Clisp in certain parts.

Anyone through the book further than I (Chapter 7) tried SBCL or other
Lispes (LispWorks is the one I've been using, but I wanted to get
Clisp for when it would be needed).

Hi Aerik,

I am on ch15 and so far no problems with sbcl. Refer to errata section
on the LoL site. The link below should also be useful.

Thanks, AT, this is good to know. From the volume of board comments
SBCL seems a little more prevalent and "industrial strength". I've
both CLISP and SBCL installed now, so should be good to go.

There is also a blog post here that deals with chapter 13.

Unfortunately my macbook died, which put a nail in the coffin of me completing my notes for SBCL/Mac. :(

It did work for me, thanks very much. Just a note for dumb newbies like me: if you are behind a firewall it will not work.

Also, I had a little glitch in which I got the following error message:

Error: Failed to install ncurses

I am not sure if the following is necessary but it worked for me. First I uninstalled ncursesw

sudo port -f uninstall ncursesw

Then I installed ncurses:

sudo port activate ncurses @5.9_1

Finally, I installed CLISP.

It works beautifully, great work. Thanks!

maybe a little late but,
when macport prompts error of unable to process install clisp or something like that, there is a line between your command sudo port install clisp and the last line, that error line, says port -f activate <something> suggesting force activation of <something> (not installed dependencies, probably libiconv gettext readline or a similar), do it, for all of them. issue the command sudo port -f activate <something>, for each. at last it will success to sudo port install clisp, i think.

Same error for me, anyone know if this is an issue or am I simply missing something?

Hello, I believe I'm having a similar problem with installing clisp via macports on os 10.9.1.

I'm seeing the below message:

--->  Computing dependencies for clisp

--->  Configuring clisp

Error: org.macports.configure for port clisp returned: configure failure: command execution failed

Please see the log file for port clisp for details:

    /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_lang_clisp/clisp/main.log

To report a bug, follow the instructions in the guide:

    http://guide.macports.org/#project.tickets

Error: Processing of port clisp failed

Any thoughts on what I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I don't know how macports works but homebrewed clisp works fine on Mavericks.

The error is being raised during checking compiler requirements.

You need to run following line to make sure Xcode command line tools installed.

sudo xcode-select --install

And try again.

sudo port install clisp

This worked for me.
