to Lancaster AGO
Hi, good colleagues,
I just got home from practicing at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for our chapter’s annual Lancaser Summer Arts Festival recital, and I’m “on cloud nine!"
As we all know, every organ has its challenges, and this one does, too, but in the main, I must wonder whether, all things considered, this is one of the better places to hear organ music in all of Lancaster County. Added to this: I think the various players for Thursday night are offering a wonderful variety of good organ music: a Vivaldi violin concerto transcribed by Bach for the organ; two organ transcriptions of orchestra music, one by Edward Elgar, one by Gustav Holst; two movements from a rarely-heard violin/organ work of Josef Rheinberger which in itself would make this program a real success and featuring our own member, a fine violinist, John Hamilton; the famous “Cortege et Litanie” of Dupré, the Duruflé Prelude and Fugue on the Name A-L-A-I-N, and perhaps most special of all, an improvisation by our member Rob Horton, who will be a finalist in the national AGO improvisation competition in Kansas City next month. THAT ALSO in itself would be worth coming out for this recital!!
In addition: our member Scott Chambers has been wonderfully kind and genial and welcoming as the various performers have gone repeatedly to the church to practice. He deserves a good turn-out as a worthy reward for all his extra work in our behalf.
Sadly enough, the publicity has not be very abundant, at least up to what I’ve seen today, but I think this program truly deserves a “full house.” Permit me to urge you to invite all persons you can to attend this event, a fine program of music but also a fine showcasing of local organists’ abilities. Those who attend it will come away with lots of musical and spiritual inspiration, and in a subtle way it can lead also to heightened respect for the organ and for the life of the Church.
The program takes place at St. Anthony’s onThursday night at 7 p.m. Y’all come!
