to Lancaster AGO
Hi, friends,

I suspect most of you know that, in my “old age,” I play every other Sunday at little St. John’s Episcopal Church, Marietta, were there is a 1959 four-rank direct-electric Wick unit organ to which my co-organist Bob Carbaugh’s son added a celeste rank and a trumpet rank, along with the necessary stuff at the console and in the organ chamber, to make those additional pipes work, all that as his project toward becoming an Eagle Scout. It’s a somewhat modest organ, but I am thankful for its assets.

The parish is going to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the present nave, first used on Easter Sunday 1868, with several special events, and I have "helped pull enough strands together” to arrange for an organ recital by Lancaster native Peter Stoltzfus, now Peter Berton, who has been almost like a son to me. Peter took degrees at U. of Michigan (Robert Glasgow, teacher), and at Yale (Thomas Murray, teacher), was assistant to Gerre Hancock at St. Thomas Church, NYC, for several years, has held several other positions, and now is at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Newport RI, where he also works with a multi-parish “choir school” situation for boys and girls that sing in the three Episcopal churches of the city. He “got his feet wet,” though, at Otterbein United Methodist Church, Lancaster, and did his organ study up to college years with our late departed friend and dean Carl Schroeder.

Date: Sunday 29 April 2018 at 4 p.m. and with a reception afterward. That’s thirteen months from now.

Peter is committed to showing how one can provide a worthy musical experience on a rather modest organ, and I look forward to his planning and playing in this regard. If you can, come and enjoy his efforts.
