The Martindale Deer Rut Walk (Approximately 8.5 miles with 2700 feet of ascent)
Meet for coffee from 9.15am at Greggs in the services area just off the A66 (CA11 0DT) about 400 yards from Junction 40 on the M6. (Please note this is before the Rheged services.) Or meet near the little old St Martin’s church in Martindale (GR434183) at 10.30am to start the walk. Take the road from Pooley Bridge to Howtown. Continue and after passing St Peter’s church on the left take the first left and after about 400 yards park on the left.
This is an excellent walk in one of the quieter areas of the Lakes with the added thrill of possibly hearing the roaring of the stags. Beda Head, Angletarn Pikes, Brock Crags, Rest Dodd and The Nab. In total 2700 feet of ascent and 8.5 miles. This can be reduced to approx 2300 feet by missing out some tops. There are also a couple of escape routes to shorten the walk.
